Another trip to Benson yesterday. Conditions on the lake have changed little, except for lower water and more weed growth. Some algae matts beginning to appear too. Hmmm, frogs?
Water was clean again, about 3' or more visibility in some areas. Temps up to 70 in shallow back water where largemouts were bedding and 'gills were sunning. First fish of the day was a 19.5" lm that hit a spinnerbait in less than 2' of water, then a couple of pickerel. Then a lot of nothing. So went to try for sheephead. Nice current was pushing as the breeze picked up. We got 6 lm on the bottom in 15' with spider grubs while targeting sheephead , go figure. Maybe all of the drum and gar near the surface pushed the bass down. Oh well. Spent some time in shallow weed flats, didn't do much until the water began to transition deeper, 3 - 4 ft. Got a few bass, lost a few. Likely some were bedding and not really eating. Gave up on back water. Got a few bass off chunk rock and main lake weed flats, mostly smaller ones, under 2 lb.
Went to an area where the pike were last Friday. The water was dirty so spent little time there. Tried again in dirty water for sheephead. No luck. Went to some clean water to try for pike.
Bullseye!! Diane hooks two pike on consecutive casts, 25" and 28" on silver bladed Vibratron. Drifted around, covering water getting a hit now and then. Diane hooks up with a good pike but it comes off shortly thereafter. I get one about 25" on a Mepps Musky Killer silver and white. We are running out of time and it's time to decide where to finish the day up. I'm thinking there had to be something to getting two fish on two casts, after hauling so much water. So I went back to the "spot", just a tip of weed bed in 5'. Bingo! Di hooks up. I visually line up a shore line marker. After her pike is released I head back to the mark. I hook up. Same drill produces one more pike for each of us. Then it dried up. Very cool. Pike made our day..again. By the time we'd quit at 6:30 we'd caught and released 16 lm, 3 pickerel, and 7 stout pike.
Di's best one in a few years. 33" 8 lb. 9 oz.
The next fish was this 31.5" model. It too hit a spinnerbait. The really big pike lures weren't working as well.
