This message is directed towards Shawn. Do you know if the state fish and wildlife dept has recently done any surveys on the fish population on lake sadagwa in whitingham, vt? I have heard from numerous old timers in the area how the fishing used to be on this lake and how much worse it has gotten in the past ten years. This lake is only about 20 minutes from my house. It is actually more like a very large pond than it is a lake. In the wintertime there is typically 30 plus ice shantys on the lake and i know it gets hammered every weekend. I've only been fishing it the past four years and i feel like the fishing has gone downhill just in that short time. any info would help. thanks!

There is no ice fishing season open for bass there. Plenty of nice bass in Sadawga, they are pressured that's for sure. It is a small water and bass can use 100% of it. It seems like it's been about 5-6 years now since the milfoil has taken hold, perhaps giving the bass even more cover than ever. As if the lake wasn't weedy and brushy enough already. Plenty of bait fish, minnows of many types and a population of arkansas golden shiners, that grow quit large. Very healthy pumkinseed sunfish population, yet I've never seen a bluegill. I go back and forth on my opinion of fishing Sadawga (it's also 20 minutes away), but I have to remind myself it's not the River, or Somerset, or Champlain.....but it's way better than Raponda or Weatherhead Hollow. If I can catch a limit of bass at Sadwaga, that's a great day, often two or three is a good day. And there are some really big bass there.

i hear of people taking bass through the ice on sadagwa all the time and have seen it on occasion as well and they just throw them on the ice. although i do not do much ice fishing at all. I would definately be curious to see the reports from the past 10 years as to the population of bass on sadagwa. It's a small small lake but i think it could be an awesome fishery with some help. i did a small tournament on the lake 2 years ago with some old time bass fisherman who said they remember when the lake had much better bass fishing and the average fish in the lake was much larger. again, its a lake a frequent often because its 20 minutes from me and i would like to see it thrive. thanks guys!

I see people try and keep them down here too, but I can assure you they won't when I am around. I can be very "diplomatic" if I need to be. Some are confused by the way the laws are written for the West River. They see no closed season on bass and don't consider the season is for "angling" only not ice fishing. More than a few times I had to explain that one so its good to have a copy of the F+W handbook with you. A few times I have seen them on the ice still alive. In that case I'll ask the person or persons to put the bass back and explain why. The one time someone said no I put it back myself. The four of them were going to "kick my @$$", but NOBODY wanted to be first. Imagine that, four scumbags with no guts ;D If I come upon dead ones on the ice I explain the rules. All but one person apologized. The one who did not tried to tell me our local game warden told him he could keep bass. I told him and his adult son that I did not believe that. The father asked me if I was calling him a liar and of course being "diplomatic" I said no, "your son is old enough to know better so your both liars". They don't speak to me anymore.............nor do they fish the Retreat Meadows anymore ;D. As far as for the fishing in Sadawga my impression of it is there are good fish in there but given all the hiding places, i.e. weeds and floating islands, they are tough to find.
