I get a kick out of the VT Master Angler Program. I've always fished multi-species, spending more time on some, and just timing the best bite on others. This is the third year that I've earned the pin and it's pretty exciting to play along throughout the season. My goal this year was to enter a smallmouth and a largemouth bass in all three open water "seasons"....spring, summer and fall. I was successful with the smallmouth. Two out of three with the largemouth. As a Sox fan, I'm comfortable with "wait 'til next year" ;D.
Here's a run down of one of each specie that I entered this year in the VT Master Angler Program.
April 13th, Champlain 37.25", hit a big Husky Jerk off the shoreline around scattered weeds.
April 19th, West River. One of several big 'gills I caught that day. Slow rolling a #2 Mepps well off of the shoreline.
It was a good year for big smallies for me. I entered 5, omitted 4 more. But this is the biggest smallie I've caught in quit a few years.... 5 lb. 20.75". Hit a plastic swimbait over 8 fow April 28th.
Bonus fish!!!! 30" pike/pickerel hybrid. Tore up a buzzbait May 7th at Champlain.
They were firred up May 7th as I also got a 24" pickerel to smack the buzzbait. This one hit just minutes before the hybrid, minutes later I lost a giant pike.
July 3rd a 10.50" rocky hit a TX rig in the milfoil at Gale Meadows Pond. Wasn't exactly fishing for rockies . but entered two others over the season.
Got the 15.25" fallfish near a temperature break in a Harriman tributary Sept. 27th. Hit the #2 Mepps. A few casts later Diane landed a 17" brown trout.
Oct. 23 Lake Sadawga. 5 lb. 2 oz. 21". Ate the same soft swimbait that the 5 lb. smallie did.........hmmm.
Gotta love Champlain for bonus fish. The bowfin were active Oct. 17th. I was keeping an eye on the spots were they were surfacing in the milfoil. I was catching bass, hoping for a 'fin. Very exciting when one actually but my TX rigged tubecraw....and was a toad. 8 lb. 6 oz. 28.50"
That was fun!
I'll post up Dianes 5 entries later.
