I'll chalk this one up to beginners luck but the day after Thanksgiving we got our first musky on fly. Chalking it up to luck because it was our very first time fishing for them. It was caught by my buddy Jeff out of my boat on a chartreuse fly and intermediate line. We used 9' 9wt rods. Fish was in the mid 30 inch range but we weren't able to get a pic. I'd be curious to know from Shawn if the strain that has been planted in VT tend to not grow long because this fish seemed to be very thick for it's length. We weren't able to get a pic because to be honest we were both scared to death of this thing...lol. No net, boga grip, or landing glove yet. I'll try to post the 10 second or so video we got but it wasn't very good quality. Gorgeous fish and we're still in shock. Can't wait to get back out there.

Congrats! Did any of my tips I emailed you the other day put you on the muskie? I hope so! I'd love to see the video! You need to gear yourself up a bit better so you can get some grip 'n grin shots for your next one. Mid-30 inch range is average for that area if you got it where I think you did. Now, compare that fish to the last mid-30 inch northern pike you caught. It'd take a 50 inch northern to fight that way, wouldn't it!? If you caught it where I think you did, then yes, the strain of muskie that we stocked there is known for not attaining huge lengths, but they do get very girthy for their length. Wish you could have snapped a photo! Awesome job once again!

Yes. We actually started way down river but the water was very muddy. The fish was caught in an area above the dirty water closer to the falls in a slow deep section. Oddly enough, we were casting towards shore on the north bank where the sun was hitting and took a random shot mid river now and again. The fish was hooked mid river. That surprised us. I will send the short video to your email, unless I can figure out how to do it on here. Next time we will concentrate more time up river and I will have a net in the boat and landing glove for sure.

Nice to hear a fishing report. For pike the special landing net they use looks like a must for big fish. Seems easier to slide one into the cradle type than get one in a hoop net. Also seems to have a more calming effect in the cradle net.

Joe - do you have a photobucket account you can upload your video so post it here? If not, I'll do it for you, if you'd like.

No I don't have a photobucket account. Post away. I'm terrible with computer related stuff. And again I apologize to the gang for the poor quality of the video. We were so darn excited I couldn't get it off video to snap a picture. I'm ordering a cradle this week and have some really big flies on the way for next time.
