Heading out for our annual trip in a couple weeks. From what I've been reading, the run is heating up and should be at a fevered pitch when we get there. Hoping for good weather and bigger fish this year. Last year we got blew off our October trip and had to reschedule in November when fishing wasn't as good. Will report when we get back after enjoying a fillet on the grill of course.

I'm jealous Brian! I was trying to plan a fall striper trip (would be my first striper trip ever - never caught one before) this year somewhere on the coast with a friend, but some unexpected issues with my house ($$) came up, putting the kye-bosh on those plans. Too bad - a friend gave me a fillet a couple years ago, and ever since, I've wanted to go and catch some. They were so good!

Hey, they run in the spring too off shore. Or, if you want to tow down to my house, we can try the Hudson. My boat just not set up for stripe bass fishing. Of course, that's assuming the NYC politicians let us catch herring for bait. Some troll with downriggers/plugs (fishmachine and friends). Their are charters too. If we fish Hudson, saves on hotel/travel costs.

Good luck with the stripers, Brian. It has been a few years since I fished for them. Their filets on a grill with some good wine or beer is hard to beat.

So true. My buddy who I own camp with was up. We had venison back straps and my last fillet from last year for dinner the other night. So good.

Well we made it back in one piece in spite of a side trip through the freaking Bronx. Long story. Anyway, we did OK. Got our limit but nothing huge. Most 28 to 32". Few pictures below. We had a good time but are very tired. Jigging and cranking these babies in while continuing the troll is tough. We had 3 or 4 doubles and got our limit (12 bass) and several blues. Had to work for them but once we finally got into them the action was pretty fast for about 1.5 hours. Time for bed!

Some more pictures a friend sent me. Sunrise on the Sea Wife IV Beautiful morning but fishing a little slow at the moment. How we do the horizontal Jigging. Wire line with 80lb text mono leader. Me fighting a fish. No level wind so have to guide line on reel with thumb. Gloves would have been a good idea! Happy face but I'm panting like a women in Lamaze class. It's hard work both jigging and reeling them in. Glad we had six guys!

Great post Brian! Hope you are enjoying those Stripah fillets! Did you eat the blues too? They are fine if bled, cooled and eaten fresh.

We actually like the blues. Grilled with thick cut onions on top works great with the left over used to make chowda....... Bass was of course awesome.

One of my favorite fish to catch on flies. I grew up on LI and fished Montauk often. Back in those days unfortunately stripers were few and far between so we usually targeted blues. I spend several weekends on Cape Cod each spring and fall chasing them now but would love to hit the old stomping grounds at Montauk in the near future. Thanks for the report.
