I just read an article in B.A.S.S. Times about something I hadn't heard anything about and wondered if anyone else had. It says NYS Ag and Markets is pushing for regulations to allow farm grown black bass to supply big demand in downstate area (big F---ing surprise). Bass bring $12 to $14 per pound! Shawn, have you guys got wind of this? B.A.S.S. is fighting it thank fully but we should too. We already have issues with poaching of pan fish, can you imagine if bass become available for purchase too? Now A&M says only farm raised black bass could be sold at market but they are doing nothing to identify farm from wild BB. There will be no way for a buyer to know (if they even care cause many of them are not from this country. They are the same folks who brought us flying carp and snake head fish). The number of unscrupulous "fisherman" will be huge. They could have a devastating effect on fishing on all bodies of NYS lakes/rivers. The other issue is diseases that develop in concentrations of fish and will it spread to wild bass population. Of course Cuomo's appointed ENCON commissioner Martin's is rolling over and going along with this reportedly. Think it's time to make some noise. This has been kicking around since 2009 it appears and been kept very very quiet! open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S768A-2011

So my typical tournament catch could be worth $240 to $260? Not a bad way to pay for gas! Oh wait ..... MY typical tournament catch would only be worth $70 or $80. What was I thinking? Still, not too bad! ;D

Why would anyone eat bass? I was told they were trash fish by the "native Vamontahs" so it must be so ;D

Well, they raise them for stocking purposes now but want to "expand" the market for our friends who hold all our debt and make our cars.

Bad news, this legislation passed and is now approved. Think we as bass fisherman need to keep an eye out for meat fisherman taking more the legal limit like some do now. Getting limits, going to the car to unload, and going back out on the water. We've all seen guys with a cooler packed full of pan fish (I've seen it in VT not NY but I'm sure it happens here as much or more then VT). There was a couple guys busted on Lake George twice in a month ice fishing a couple years ago. Champlain is ripe for abuse as DEC has little presence on the lake. In my 40 plus years fishing Champlain, I've never once been checked by NYS DEC. VT F&G checks often as they should.

But that leaves for alot of time on the water unchecked. If we suspect someone is in violation wouldn't we have the right to ask to see what they have in their possession? The resource belongs to all of us.
