A nice looking day. What to do? Easy...go to Benson, VT, launch the boat at 11:00 and go fishing. The water was 55 degrees and a bit more turbid than last week, but still about 2 1/2' visibility. Lake level at the Burlington ferry dock was 98.82 or so but the water was noticeably higher at the Benson ramp than it was last week. Light breeze and partly sunny, hopes were high.
Went north a bit to an area where a friend had caught a few pike last week. We like pike. They were still there and we each caught and released one. A stout one about 5 lbs. and a 31" thinner model that weighed 7 lb. 3 oz.
Kept the boat on the main lake in about 6' to 7' most of the day and casted in to areas where the water was 2' or more close to the bank. Wood and debris held fish and the bait was up in the water column. Took a couple of quick passes in back water later in the day.
First fish of the day and certainly the most awesome was this 29" 9 lb. 12 oz. Bowfin! Hit a TX rig Zoom Baby Brush Hog on an isolated piece of wood in 6'. It crapped all over the boat during the photo shoot! Bowfins Revenge! Well worth the clean up effort!!
Diane gets a small mouth on a spider grub near a small drain.
I always wondered if a train would turn off the fish, not so. Diane gets a LM on #5 Mepps while a 1/2 mile long freight goes by.
A wind squall came up at about 2:30. Wasn't sure if it was for real or just a gust. Hunkered down behind a point (because we don't have a big shiny sharp looking Bass Cat) and threw the pike lures for a bit. Then went back and re-fished some water. Either big bass just moved in or the squall turned them on as we each caught some good chunks. A Norman Baby N fooled this one.
Diane gets a good one on a red Senko at a popular community hole.
All day we caught and released 46 LM, 2 SM, 3 Pike, 3 Pickerel and 1 yellow perch. We caught them on small crank baits, spinner baits, senkos, spider grubs, #5 Mepps and jerk baits. We quit at 6:40 and counted 28 deer and 13 turkeys on the ride home. Until next time.....
