While I was preparing the picnic lunch (turkey and swiss on rye w/ lettuce, roasted red peppers, sweet onion, tomato and Russian dressing) for our days fishing trip I got a call from rgang4. Roy called to say the crappie bite was happening on the CT river. Good timing too, as my plan wasn't set on where to go. I was tossed up between a multi specie trip to the river or a smallmouth trip to Harriman. Roy's call made it easy. Crappies here we come. Thanks Roy!
On Diane's first (maybe second) cast a jumbo crappie ate her Pearl Pro Blue Zoom Super Fluke. We've never seen one nearly that big before, 13.5". What a toad. She released it so Roy can catch it too ;D ;D ;D. My best one was only 12.25"
I'm no stranger to big bluegills on the river, but this bad boy was a full 10" long. Hit a slow rolled #2 gold w/ red&white Mepps.
We had nice day fishing setbacks of the West and CT river. Small tackle fishing is a riot this time of year. Never know what will bite next. The tally sheet shows we caught and released 9 'gills, 1 'seed, 10 crappies, 11 perch, 4 small pike, 2 nice smallies, 7 largemouths (dinks except for two), 1 pickerel and 1 rockbass.
Just so everyone doesn't think we are completely crazy, we did go to Harriman the next day and whacked pre spawn smallies.
Another Master Angler class bass for Di (19.25"). We had doubles on when she landed it, mine was only 18.5" . We hit them pretty good but the real big ones weren't around. All day (noon to 6:00) we caught 23 and a small salmon. Jerkbaits, swimbaits and Mepps. No bottom dragging necessary .
