We're back at it. Our first trip to Champlain, third outing overall. Put in at South Bay at 11:00. Water was 52 degrees, good visibility about 2.5 feet, lake level 99.05, and gusty WNW wind. It was an on again off again kinda day. Take the jacket off, put the jacket back on. All day long. The gusty wind made boat control and casting accuracy a challenge. Several trees were caught and released...none harmed. Fished back waters up toward and above the Narrows. Oddly the back waters had pretty much the same temps and water color as the main channel. Caught bass here and there but overall they weren't very active (or maybe not even there). Had some luck on rock points, shallow wood, emerging grass, but no pattern. We tried pretty had to find the Pike but had no luck with them. Over all we caught and released 15 LM (two were dinks), 2 SM and 3 small pickerel. Quit at 6:30. The most remarkable part of the day was watching no less than 5 pair of Ospreys building or sitting nests. All up and down the Drowned Lands. It was my turn to catch the days lunker. This 5 lb. 6 oz model bit a white Yum Houdini shad next to a shallow log. It was my turn to get a good one. Because the Mrs. got this 4 lb. 14 oz. job on the CT River on Sunday while I caught dinks. All is fair in love and fishing.

Nice fish brian, I found the same thing on the water temps. Hoping it warms up a little for this coming weekend and they move in the shallows.

Nice fish Brian. Thanks for the report. That LM your wife is holding has a huge head. I would have guessed more weight than that.

Yesterday I went to South Bay for the first time ever. It was really winding after I got out. I got nothing like yours Brian, but I found 2 schools of small LM and stopped counting after 60. The largest was a little over 2 lbs but I had fun and my arms got sore. All were caught on lipless cranks. I also got 2 pickeral on spinnerbaits.

5lbs 6oz !!! Nice job Brian! You two definitely know where to find them, year round! Don't worry - the big pike will show up ready to eat soon Diane. I'm sure they're still hunkered down in a little deeper water recovering a bit after this early spawn they just went through.

I kinda figured the pike were in post spawn funk. But I wasn't seeing much bait shallow yet either, gills etc. Soon.
