Hey Brian, great report and pictures. My wife told me that I was a dope not to go. Of course, she doesn't know about the Mardi Gras. Great group of instructors. Mark Davis instructed at the last one that I attended. Had some very good discussions with him in between sessions. All of the pros go out of their way to be helpful. Bob Had you not mentioned Mr. Davis we could have drawn the conclusion you were speaking of the "pro's" from the Mardi Gras. ;D

GREAT post Brian. You certainly had a good time, and I feel your excitement. I agree with you're "note to self" about tournament fishing on the GL's. It's for young bucks or just plain studs. No telling what the weather will do or where your partner will "take" you. ;D Black and Blue will do! In super clear water black and black will do better.

No telling what the weather will do or where your partner will "take" you. ;D Black and Blue will do! In super clear water black and black will do better. Black and blue was the only color I ever used for years. Used a black pork frog as a trailer. When fishing real clear water I would remove most of the blue strands until the jig looked mostly black and was a bit on the sparse side. Today its black/blue and something crawfishy looking that has some green, brown and maybe a hint of chart. or a few strands of orange. Still like pork when the water is below 50. Today my trailers are black/blue #11A pork frog and a green pumpkin #11 pork frog. Plastics are Zoom chunks, same colors and maybe a Power Craw or Paca Craw. I have a few odd colors I keep around but don't need them and rarely use them.

Dave talked about trimming jig strands as did a couple others. Most didn't thin much but they trip back to a little longer the the end of the hook, more if strands interfered with action of trailer. Nobody uses pork anymore because tends to bunch up on hook point so you end up missing fish. I think it was the zoom craw one of them used that had a small body, super stretchy material, and big claws that float up. Pretty neat. I didn't buy any because I most have 20 bags now I'm determined to use first... Any yes, I have a few bottles of pork that is older then sin too.

"Nobody" will always use pork until its not available anymore. I've caught way too many fish to change now. There really are some differences between pork and plastic and each have there own good points. I've heard people claim that pork bunches up and gets in the way of the hook point. I've also heard Bigfoot roams the woods of Benson's Landing, but until I see it I won't believe it! When you put a pork trailer on your hook put belly side opposite the gap. Most people do not. If I use a plastic "chunk" I do the same thing. If you miss them its most often just operator error not the trailer interfering. Trimming the length of the skirt was mentioned and I always do that for several reasons, profile being one. Also, seems like in the water, shorter strands wiggle and expand/contract more than longer ones. Weedguards also can use some trimming. The cheap ones I buy at Wal-Mart are stiff and the length is never the same on any two jigs. If they are higher than the hook I trim then off at about a 15 degree angle, lower towards the head. Most of the better jigs the weedguards are much more subtle and the lengths are more appropriate, but don't be afraid to make little adjustments. Once you gain confidence in a jig you have a big fish lure that will not often fail you. Maybe we can do some trading if you want to get rid of your pork. Do you have any of the Strike King Bo-Hawg? That was the best pork trailer ever made. Uncle Josh is now much better than it used to be and its what I use now when the water is cold. Guess I should give plastic its props as well. Unlimited colors sizes and styles are readily available and they can be fished as trailers or on their own. Baits like Power Craws, Sweet Beavers, Kalin's grubs, just to name a few are great fish catchers by themselves. Man, I need to go fishing!

Not only trim the guard, but flatten and spread it out so it's flatter makes jig more weedless Dave said too.
Yeah, spring can't come to soon.

Don't want to contradict what maybe is good advise, so I'll stop here. Ah, what the heck. Seemed like the hook got exposed too easily and fishing in grass that was a problem. Only did it once or twice and once is done its permanent.

[I've heard people claim that pork bunches up and gets in the way of the hook point. . If the pork trailer rolls on the hook shank when a bass eats the jig, then there is a real chance that the "meat" of the pork can be impaled by the hook point, instead of the bass being hooked. With a plastic "chunk" (trailer) it's much more likely the hook will rip through the chunk and result in a hook set, no matter where the chunk is. When I used to fish a lot of pork, before plastic "chunks". I would slide a 1" piece of plastic worm up the hook shaft of the jig before attaching the pork. This way the pork could not travel up the shank and flip. A tip I learned from Jim. I quit using pork for the simple reason that pork dries out in the air. No problems like that with plastic. I did love that old Bo-Hawg pork too!

Plastic does have its advantages but I can't kick the pork habit, not in cold water anyway. I've never had a case where the hook was impaled in the pork. Maybe I just don't fish enough. I'll try to get out more this year. I'll let you know how it goes. ;D
