Been hearing about this rig and saw a FLW show on Kentucky Lake today that featured this set up. All I can say is wow, this thing produces and can see where it could work on Champlain, especially spring and fall. Any one tried it on Champlain (if it's legal) or other places and how did they do. I know Jody has down south and had some luck. Guess got to dig into the VT/NY F&G reg books to see if we can even throw this thing. Would need clear water though. All the floating grass/weeds like we had last year would bog up that rig to no end.
Later found this for VT. Appears couldn't have more then two baits on one rig. Couldn't find any thing in NY to prevent it's use.
"3.2 Whether still fishing, casting, or trolling in Vermont waters, a person may take fish only by using not more than two lines over which he or she has immediate control and to each of which lines is attached not more than two baited hooks, or more than three artificial flies, or more than two lures with or without bait, except that at Seymour Lake and Little Averill Lake a person may take fish only by using not more than one line."

Surprised no one has brought this subject up. First learned of it back in October after Elias won on Guntersville. I was really excited to try it at first, but have kind of backed off since. I do however think I'll be using some version of the A-Rig, but as it is known now with 5 lures being presented, it is not legal in VT. In NY I have heard it is legal. There is a three wire version available from one or more companies that I believe is legal. But as they have warned check your state regulations before using it in your state.

I think this three wire version of an A-Rig would be legal in Vermont. Also think a good stout med. heavy to heavy casting rod would be enough to handle this rig. Fully rigged with lures weighing 1/4 oz. would be 1 1/8 oz. My new swimbait rod is a bit stiff, bet this rig would make for a fast break-in period. This is the Bass Assault Jr. rig from Bass Assault lures available at Landbigfish.com

Question: Vermont & Champlain waters: In reference to "lures" does that also mean hookless lures? That is, with a 5 wire version is it legal to have 3 lures with out hooks and 2 with hooks? or with the 3 wire -2 with hooks and one with out as a teaser? My thought is in looking at the guide it reference hooks...lures with hooks and teaser lures are ok.. agree? or disagree?

That was my interpretation too in Vermont. NY seems to not address it so it would be legal I believe. I couldn't find anything that would indicate otherwise. Want to do some experimenting to see if I can build one. They are getting like $25 for one rig unless you buy at least 5 at a time. Someone turned me on to one place where can get unpainted ones for $16 each if buy at least 5 plus shipping of course. That's pretty steep. I suppose if you could find one or two others to put an order together it would make it a little more economical. If anyone is interested....
I think a two bait system could be made that would create the same schooling action. Got a few months to play so will see what I can come up with.
Re reel/pole/line. Good article in this months Bassmasters and they recommend heavy equipment (strong reel/flipping pole) and heave braid line. Also wire hooks that will straighten if you get your rig snagged so hook straightens an you can get the rig back. Not a bad idea!

I looked on the DEC web page and couldn't find that info though I expected to find the limitation as you described. Where did you find it? I got a hard copy of the regs but it is up at camp so I was hoping to find it on the website. I will look again. Thanks for the clarification.

Never mind. Duuhhhh......... First line under the chart!!! Thanks again, link below. Was looking deep into the written text when it was right there in front of my nose. www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31510.htmlI still think a 2 bait system could closely replicated the schooling technique. Got to get busy....

Roy - the 3-wire version is no more or less legal than the 5-wire version. It's not how many wires are on the rig, it's how many lures you attach to it. You can use the 5-wire version if you want, as long as there are only 2 lures attached to it. Same as the 3-wire version - you could only put on 2 lures. If you want, you can make a 100-wire version. Still legal as long as you only attach 2 lures. Thanks Shawn! Glad you commented. I always believed though never checked, that three lures were permitted in VT waters. I never had run more than two and that was ice fishing. I am going to revisit the 2011 digest and read the 2012 once it comes out. I will be trying an A-Rig this coming year if there are no issues with its legality. I'm curious to see if it will catch more than one at a time in schooling situtaions that so often occur on Champlain. Thanks again Shawn.

Schodackbassman - you might want to check NY's regs again. The Alabama Rigs' legality would be different for Champlain versus NY in general. Champlain: The NY regs guide states requirements similar to VT's: "Each fishing line may have no more than two baited hooks or artificial lures with or without added natural bait." The number of hook points is not specified. General/statewide NY regulations (note that there may be other exceptions similar to Champlain - I did not look): The definition of "Angling" in the NY regs guide states: "...each line is limited to not more than five lures or baits or a combination of both, and in addition, each line shall not exceed fifteen hook points..." So for example, you would be allowed up to 5 lures with each lure having one treble hook I don't think the Alabama Rig is legal in NY waters of Champlain. Remeber the days when all you needed was one hook and a worm? Boy, what have we done?

This is from the VTFW handbook; Angling: Fishing by means of hook and line in hand or attached to a rod, or by casting or trolling artificial flies, or lures or baited hooks, provided that the person angling does not take fish through the ice, from the ice or from any object supported by the ice. A person may take fish only by using not more than two lines of which he or she has immediate control. Each line may not have more than two baited hooks or three artificial flies or two lures with or without bait.
What I read here is that you cannot have more than two lures on your line. If more than two "lures" were on your line at one time the set up would be illegal in my mind depending on what the definition of a lure is..........
Just checked for a definition in the VTFW handbook but did not find one. Is a lure a lure only if it has a hook in it?
Our game wardens have always been fair and seem to be willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the outdoorsman, but right now I think it leaves it to their discretion. Shawn, would you comment again please?
Sorry if I mislead anyone about the three wire rig being legal in VT. I had assumed that if one could use three flies as they often do for trout in the NEK, then three lures were permitted as well. After reviewing the handbook I see my mistake.

I can't help but chuckle every time I consider the A-Rig. Bass fishermen are very willing to shell out exorbitant amounts of money to buy the latest and greatest of fluorocarbon fishing line. All with the intent of making their lures more stealthy, less intrusive. Now, along comes a rig with a ridiculous amount of terminal tackle and everyone wants it too. Wonder if they rig it on flouro?

From what I've read, they are using line just short of bailing twine! 60 to 100lb test spiderwire and such. Guess fish get so turned on they don't care. Kind of like one of us trolling a Rolex and diamonds through a singles bar...... Even we could get some with that bait.... ;D

That was what I needed to see, (maybe for the 2nd time ) a clear definition of what a lure is. Thanks!
