On Monday I bought the last Koppers Live Target frog that was on the rack. No telling how many they once had at the Dick's in Keene. There is a core of serious bass fishermen in southern NH ( a few in VT too). It is the 3/4 oz. 2 5/8" model. The design is the same as Snagproof and River-2- Sea frogs but the plastic body material is thinner and more pliable than either. The hook is sharper than the others as well. Strangely, it contains no rattle device (I'll fix that). The coloration is pretty, but color matters little to me. At $9.99 it's a decent value. I'm curious how many toothy fish hits it can take....before it looks like a blown out inner tube.

I've been drooling over those ever since I saw their ad. However, I have to keep telling myself, the pretty colors and realistic pattern means nothing to a bass in the slop. You could drag an old chunk of shag carpet over the slop and probably get the same amount of blow-ups.
99% of the lures out there are made to catch fishermen, not fish!

As a lure designer here are my thoughts on some of this...keep in mind I'm not a fish or even a tournament pro The following is from a blog post I wrote a while back on lure design... "One of my favorite reaction baits is a black on black jig-n-pig. I believe that when a fish sees a jig-n-pig fall past them they only have a split second to decide if they will eat it. In that split second a jig-n-pig simultaneously looks like it could be a crayfish, a leech, a tadpole or even a small snapping turtle. All those things are very eatable for a fish. What the jig-n-pig doesn't do is give off many negative indicators. A fast moving black outline that is very fluid and natural in it's movements doesn't give a fish a lot of reasons to proceed with caution. That's exactly what I want in a reaction bait...I believe that the reason the fish hits has everything to do with getting all the "right" signals and none of the wrong ones. When that happens I don't think they can help but react." As for frogs I always want mine to have an off white belly...a little yellow doesn't hurt. The rest of the lure could be all white for me because I'm not worried about what the seagull is seeing

So why not an all black frog? They work for me, especially when fishing over dense canopy. Honestly, I don't think for a minute that a bass really thinks it's going to have frog legs for dinner. Like you said it a reaction bite. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. BTW, I haven't had a chance to wet the Live Target Frog yet, it's been a a very strange year for us and it just keeps getting weirder.

Hi all this is a great forum. I spent a day in the boat with Zell Rowland and his theory on top water has stuck with me. Basically it is that there are only a few colors of top water baits White belly, Yellow belly, Black belly and clear the rest of the bait doesn't matter to the fish. His next sentence was "But I have every color Pop-R they make." The Live Target frogs are about as real as they come but your right they probably would hit the shag carpet also. Ramel

I remember reading somewhere in cyberspace about a guy who would pre-fish with a piece of broom handle with a screw eye in the end of it. He claimed color didn't matter and he was looking for blow-ups to locate fish for a tournament. No hooks involved to give the bass a sore lip I guess a piece of carpet would work the same way.

Years ago a friend of mine down in PA used to prefish by tying the worm directly (harder plastics back then). He never stuck fish, but located lots and worms were cheap.

When I was fishing tournaments we would take the hooks off to prefish. Ramel

I'd wager that Zell had all of the colors not because he was sponsored (he was), but because if his co-angler started to get bit when he wasn't...........he'd be covered.

More colors to keep up with the co-anglers.....There is probably a lot of truth in that... Hahahahaha
