Launched at Benson landing at 10:30 on Tuesday. The fog had just lifted, the water was fairly clean (1.5'-2.5' vis.) and calm. It's been a while since we've had a clam day at Champlain. Water temp. 48 to 49 in most places and air temp was, well, take off a layer or two of clothing as the day went on. Nice! The lake level keeps coming up ( 97.75, but up to the dock deck at Benson) and I figured with a couple of fairly warm overnights in a row and some new weed growth we'd find some shallower fish. Not really, as it turned out. We spent half the day above Benson and half the day in backwater below. Tried a lot of things; grass flats, grass points, rock points, inside weed edges, drops, but nothing really worked for us. We did have a super nice day on the water and it was weird not to have the heat on in the truck for the ride home. We quit at 5:30 with one 2 lb. LM and 4 pickerel between us. I lost two other bass and Diane had several short hits on her lures which resulted in huge boils rising up to the surface. Pike maybe? At the ramp another boat was coming in. The guy said he'd caught some in 18' to 22'. Diane said to me she'd put up her rods for the year if we have to fish that deep. No worries...we'll find 'em shallow again, maybe next time. Very pretty day. Looking north from Peter's Bay.
