The weather forecast for Rutland county sounded a bit drier than it was here in Windham county yesterday. We've been itching to get up to Champlain. So we trailered north through the rain for 70 miles or so before it let up. By the time we got to Benson's Landing at 11:15 it was looking like it was going to be a nice day. But just in case, put on the rain gear and boots. Usually a good talisman to ward off the showers.
The water at Benson was dirty, 58 degrees. I thought it would be starting to clear by now. But a stiff north wind had it roiled up. Couldn't see the lower unit on the trolling motor, couldn't see a spinnerbit a few inches down. So.....off we went in search of cleaner water. Fished the lake much as we do in early spring. Backwaters, culverts, inside weed edges, shorelines and points. When the water was cleaner I could see the lower unit...barely. We caught fish in 1' to 6' of water on the usual spring assortment of lures. The first 5 bass we caught were on five different lures; a jig, spoon, TX rig crawtube, buzzbait and crankbait. By the time we quit at 6:00 (I wanted to stay later as the big 'uns were waking up for dinner, but The Mrs. said time to go ) the tally sheet showed 12 LM, 4 SM and 2 pickerel between us.
Timing was perfect when we pulled up on a community hole. I caught 4 SM (one was a dink) in a row on a Bandit 300 crankbait. Meanwhile.....
Diane lands a 3 lb. LM on a spinnerbait. Gotta love a community hole in tough conditions
Towards evening time we went back to the "prettiest" water we'd see all day. Started chucking 3/8 oz. buzzbaits, had some big bites. This one tipped the scale at 4 lb. 11 oz. 19.5". Toad.
Medium action spinning rod with 20 lb braid gets a work out with bass and weeds.
There it is....3 lb. 10 oz. not counting the salad. Why did we have to quit? Oh well, next time.
