Way down south in Windham county, near the southern end of Harriman Reservoir, is Lake Sadawga. A small, weedy, brushy, organic bottom, soup bowl of a pond. It gets a fair amount of fishing pressure. Very popular in winter and a few clubs have bass tournaments each season. It's never been one of my favorite ponds, usually windy and every kind of stringy weed under the sun seems to grow there. But milfoil found it's way in there several years ago, the water cleared some, and I'm liking it better each trip.
What Sadawga does have is tons of bait. That, and giant rock bass. Over the years we (the wife and I) have caught rockies on jig and pigs (not so unusual), big TX rigs and even Snag-Proof Tournament Frogs that the rock bass were trying to eat in the "dollar pads".
So, with Master Angler in mind I set off to Sadawga last Wednesday. A beautiful sunny totally calm day with crisp fall colors. I had one of my better days there, catching and releasing 8 largemouths (none over 2 lb., but all "keepers"), a few small pickerel, and target species...a 10" rockbass.
I went back to Sadawga again this Wednesday (9/29) for a short trip before work. This time I had Master Angler bluegill in mind. I love fishing 'gills in spring but I've never before tried for them in fall. I was defeated. Tried a float and micro tube, and a drop shot with micro grub. Got a lot of micro perch and micro pickerel, but only two pumpkinseeds (decent sized). In between time, I was casting a crankbait or pitching a TX rig for bass. Caught and released 5 largemouths up to 3 3/4 lb. But the highlight of my day was another Master Angler rockbass...bigger than the first, considerably. Water temp. was 63 to 65, water clear, light breeze, pretty fall colors.
10.25", the board is 4" wide. Solid rocky, ate a TX rigged Zoom green pumpkin Super Hog in 5' of water on a milfoil hump.
Nice day on the pond. The "floating island" to the left, Haystack peak to the right in background.
