A couple years ago I was fishing from shore one fall evening for panfish using crappie jigs hung under a long thin Thill balsa bobber. Some unknown fish kept ignoring the jig and hitting the bobber practically every cast.
Since I wasn't catching much on the jig, I decided to change rods and snap on a 2" Rapala floating plug. Cast out, bam, hooked a fish that pulled hard zig zagging to the side, tangled in weed and got off. What is this, I was wondering? Cast again, another hit, I finally got this one in, again covered in weed. It was a just big bluegill. That fish couldn't even fit the plug in its mouth. Why did it hit a plug? I cast out again, and a repeat -- another big bluegill. These were MA class fish. They didn't count, because I'd already caught one in the spring, but still they were big enough to fillet. Altogether I caught 8 and missed a bunch of others because of weeds or the small trebles, but these were the most aggressive bluegills I'd seen.
It was fun! I haven't had it happen again this last year, but I did try every once in awhile to see if they think they're piranhas again.
