Been on Southern Champlain two or three times since my last post but haven’t had time to post. Lots of new stuff to do being by myself these days. Getting better at laundry, dishes, cooking and stuff but now that the weather has broke I’ve got lots to do outside too. And also have to get everything packed for the weekend too. No complaints, just real busy. Maybe that’s good.
The fishing has been good. Maybe not the best ever but maybe the top two or three. It’s been a great year for crankbait fishing, specifically squarebills. Probably anything would work but I’ve been fishing small. Bandit 100 or KVD 1.5.
Both had been deadly until last week. That bite slowed a lot. Still had it not been for a few lost fish I would have had another good catch on squarebills. But I lost a few and the bite instead of getting better as the day wore on actually slowed way down.
Luckily Brandon was there last Sunday and catching fish where I wasn’t so I fished a spot he had got fish at and started catching again.
Fished a chatterbait and swim jig in shallow water and was thrilled to finally get the swim jig going. So easy to throw and it works in the right spots. Heck works in the wrong spot too if you force it.
Later in the afternoon I took a chance and made a stop where I’ve had no luck all year but my gut said it should work and it did.
Finally got the topwater stuff to work. Two fours on back to back casts made me smile and then getting a five on my buzzbait made my day.
It’s been and interesting year to say the least. Lots of smallies early then some good ones but just like that they were gone, or maybe just their mood changed because of spawning.
Pike for sure are back on the feed. One has a taste for human flesh. Luckily I didn’t need stitches when this one raked me with it’s teeth.
And of course what would spring on Champlain be without a n odd ball catch or two.
Weekends at the camper with my wife have been nice. It’s a place we both enjoy and can put our problems aside for a bit. Addyson is getting to know Addison County. She’s been to the lake for the first time, walked around Jim’s Bass Cat at Chipmans and last weekend went hiking at Chittenden Resevoir. One happy dog.
I’m at the camper now with a little quiet time by myself and no chores to do. Feels good. Fishing tomorrow and hopefully Friday too. Weather looks good so I took a chance and came up. Hope the weather geeks are right for a change.
