As we all know the lake has been low for sometime. I was hoping we’d get some relief from a big tropical system at some point or at the very least the water would stop dropping as the temps cooled off. Neither has happened and now the water level is lower than I have ever seen it. Last reported level was 93.15.
I took some pics but you really have to see it in person. It’s pretty shocking.
Point at tower #70. Nothing but mud for a long way out.
Never saw this much of the point out of the water
Don’t know how or if the low water has an effect on the fishing but safe to say it has not been good for some time now. At times it’s all I can do to catch a limit. But by the same token at times fishing is not half bad but it’s not been real good since late July. Last few weeks had been the worst but then yesterday for whatever reason the bass bit, and on topwater no less, and the pike were willing too.
This one was actually on a swim jig the night before when I had my net woman/photographer with me❤️
And if that wasn’t cool enough I got what is most likely my biggest Champlain walleye ever!
Eight bass and eight pike on buzzbaits is a good day. A few more I’d say a great day. Very strange that the pike fishing has not been better. Been some clear water, clean weeds, and good cloud cover at times with just the right wind for a good pike bite but it’s nowhere near what it should be for this time of year. I don’t see much bait in the shallows other real small stuff. No gills ,no perch, no shiners. Most of the bass I catch are not as fat as usual and some are down right skinny. Seems as nothing is quite right at the moment but still have hope that the fishing will be good soon.
Lots of weed but seems only the Eurasian Milfoil is holding bass but there is not a lot of it. Best spots always have some thicker milfoil and openings in the grass or around it. I get most around it on chatterbaits or swim jigs, a few over it on buzzbaits or toads and a few buried up in it, usually on a worm.
Been lots of wind and the water has been very dirty prior to last weekend when it had cleared quite a bit.
It’s been a good year nonetheless. As I get older I appreciate just being on the water more than the actual fishing and catching. Especially this year being it looked like back in April we would not even be able to set up our camper. But we did and had a great year and shared it with family and some very special friends. Had a good morning fishing with my nieces husband and got him his biggest pike ever, 35” and 9.8 lbs.
We got nice bass too. Back to back 4+ lbers
I also took my “pretend granddaughter “ on a bird watching/sunset trip. We were not disappointed 😎
A beautiful double rainbow just before sunset.
She almost put a nice bass in the boat too but that would have been just too perfect and we’d never be able to top that. Now we have something to shoot for.
Been lucky to get some nice cats lately. Chatterbait mostly but this one on a Big TRD😱 If my count is right this was Master Angler specie #13 on the year.
My first ever from Catfish Bay
Kind of glad summer is winding down. I was up a lot at 3 a.m. to be on time for the topwater bite and sunrise.
At times it was worth it but for the rest of the year I hope to just see the sunsets 🌅
Gotta love Champlain!
