Had a three day weekend last week starting on Friday. Launched early out of Larrabee’s which is my normal M.O. but lately been launching even earlier just to try and get a few more bites because once the sun gets up it’s been hard to even get a hit.
Fortunately Friday the bite lasted for quite a bit longer. I wasn’t expecting much company from the Elites but just to be safe I didn’t fish but two spots before they arrived. During an FLW event a few years back I got two four pounders from a guys starting spot. Didn’t want that guilt again.
As I guessed hardly anyone came south. Maybe six boats but it was real quiet and I had the place to myself😎. Conditions were nice for running so I decided I’d try to work my way to the bridge. Got a few here and there mostly on toads over shallow eel grass. Had a few big fish follow in one spot but no bites. Not sure what they were.
Eventually the topwater stuff died but I had a little swim jig bite start around 8:30 or so. Found a school of three pounders with the swim jig and caught a pile of them on a big TRD and a 1/6 oz. Ned Head sporting their poor excuse for a weedguard😂 used a drop shot and a Senko too. Had more spinning rods on deck than bait casting which usually is a bad sign but I got fish on all the spinning gear.
Definitely found a little magic where a bare spot had formed between to weed beds. Caught them off the points with the Ned rig and others and in the open pocket on swimjigs. Probably caught a dozen or so before the bite died. Not too much after that though. Got one good one off the bridge on the VT side on a swimbait and few smaller fish on my way back to Larrabee’s. By days end around 4 the wind was cranking and I’d had enough but being lately I’ve had enough by noon, this was a good day!
Saturday was our 39th wedding anniversary. Wife wanted to do something outdoorsy. Maybe that’s why we made it 39.
Packed up the kayaks early and headed out the door at 6:15 for the Halfway House in Shoreham. If you want a good breakfast stop by.
From there we headed to the Adirondacks and Saranac Lake. Lots of hikers hitting the trails up there though not many looked like seasoned hikers.
Saw the same when we got to the boat landing on Lower Saranac. Lots of people learning how to steer a canoe and others trying to figure out how to sit in one. For starters you don’t face eachother😉
We paddled around for hours. Looks like it has plenty of fish but with 21 islands and lots of weed beds and lots of coves and points they may be hard to find. I’d try it during the week sometime but weekends during this pandemic I don’t think so, too busy!
Sunday I started from Larrabee’s again. Nobody at the ramp when I arrived. I guess some people really do sleep in on Sunday🤔
Lake was a little breezy where I started and the fish were not on fire there so I moved and found some nice calm water and some fish😎
Couldn’t get topwater stuff to work so switched to a swimbait. That worked. Once I knew they were there I changed my topwater lure and retrieve. Had to let bait sit a long time and then just give it a bit of life and more often than not it got eaten. No big ones but all good ones and a few smallies mixed in. I even got one on a Whopper Plopper. Finally I am not the only guy in the world to not catch a fish on one!!
Topwater worked almost until I quit which was about the time the wind started.
Good weekend for me. Best since early July when everything was working until suddenly nothing worked. Still no pike 😏 but at least my tackle supply is in good shape😉
Deer liked the quiet as well. Saw a few along the shore both days.
