Hope all had a great July 4th, I know I did. Had Thursday and Friday off making it a four day weekend of which I got to fish three days😎
Looked like a good fireworks display at Chipmans on the Fourth judging by the amount of spent fireworks there!
Thursday I headed to Larrabee’s, thank God no NJ Bass tourney this time. Very quiet morning with just a bit of a breeze. Had three rods on deck when I arrived at the ramp, one of which I broke taking the cover off my boat🤬 So I started with two rods rigged for topwater. Fish were there and feeding. Lost count of how many I caught but it was a bunch and a mix of SM and LM. Topwater bite lasted a half hour or so until the sun hit the water. Rigged up my chatterbait rod with a swimbait being my swimbait rod was the one I broke. Got used to fishing and catching with the chatterbait rod real quick. It is now my swimbait rod I think.
Had to relocate once the sun got up or maybe the fish just figured me out. No topwater at the next stop but the swimbait was working. Can’t remember going anywhere else until about 10 when I revisited the first stop. Caught two right away on back to back casts. Stopped after two because I wanted to save the spot for two guests. Of course that didn’t work😡 and pretty much nothing else did either the rest of the day. Don’t know why the fishing gets so tough lately mid morning to midday. Luckily things would change on Sunday😉
Friday the weather geeks called for Tstorms all day from early morning on so I went to Dunmore thinking I’d be off quick and if not Dunmore has been good to me lately anyway. Well it never did storm and the Tstorms never came🙄 and the fish never really did bite much so I headed to Champlain arriving around 10. And of course it wasn’t long and it did feel stormy and I never felt comfortable and the fish stopped biting right on cue more or less at 11 or so. Headed home early and a bit dejected. Felt like I wasted a day off. About all I got out of the day was a nice sunrise a few bass and two boat launches😏
Saturday took my wife kayaking on Sunset Lake. Perfect day for it other than the wind popping up yet again. Did a little fishing, a little swimming and a lot of paddling into the wind in whatever direction we went! What a workout that was! I didn’t even have the energy to ask her to go to Champlain for the evening let alone actually do it. Had a nice campfire, rested up and got my tackle and boat ready for Sunday. Early. Real early. As nice as the sunrise is moon set can be even better especially when they occur simultaneously 😎
Moon over Ticonderoga, sweet!
Caught holy hell when my wife saw I was leaving at 3:15 but she got over it, sort of. My topwater spot was still hot but I missed or lost several nice ones and eventually the fish moved or busted me. Peeled off to my second stop. Lots of activity on the surface but the topwater bite was not as good. Got a few and was sure more were around so I went back to the swimbait. Action was hot until I heard boats coming from TI. Stopped fishing as they ran towards me so I could witness all the activity on the surface cease. And it did. Managed only one more until I moved.
Still early enough to relocate and try and get topwater going again so I did and it worked. Buzzbait was the ticket at the third stop.
Got like five good bites from one small area . Water was shallow and dirty there so I looked for a similar spot. Shallow and dirty rarely works for me but it did Sunday. Called Brian for some help finding a spot we did good at years ago and he helped me not only find the spot but also some nice bass nearby👍
Night before I rigged a rod a friend gave me with some 40lb braid and attached a 15 lb floro leader to it. Not a fan of braid for handling but it worked nicely on this rod that is just a bit too soft in the tip for my favorite mono. Will be using it some more going forward. If it continues to do as well I’ll definitely stick with it. If not I guess I’ll get another Veritas when they go on sale again.
Felt real good about the lake after Sunday. Think I could have done better on Thursday too if we’d done the right things the right way. Friday, just one of those days.
Lake level seemed steady, color good. Weeds coming in but not great. Not sure how much time I’ll have this weekend but I’d like to do a late afternoon trip on a Saturday and fish early again on Sunday.
