Saturday the weather was just beautiful and the fishing was just great! Monday the weather was miserable and the fishing was almost as good but nowhere near as enjoyable that’s for sure.
I almost missed out on the day on Saturday because our plan was to get the camper set up and then fish Sunday because Sunday was supposed to be the better of the two days. I’m sure it wasn’t! We hiked on Sunday, took a long drive and did a little stream fishing and the wind was howling anywhere we went. I have to thank my wife for Saturday. It was her idea to put off some of the peripheral stuff for the camper and fish Saturday instead🙏🙏
I got a bit of a head start on her at about 10:30. Parking lot was packed at Larrabee’s. Lots of trailers and lots of shore fisherman and kids. I hung out close to the ramp until my wife showed up. When she did I showed off catching a fat 3.5 lber as she walked towards me near the south ramp.
I have to take it easy running when she’s with me. She gets cold when it’s warm and freezes when it’s cool so we made a short run to check out Brandon’s new ride at Catfish Bay.
He made a good choice for sure!
Nothing doing at Catfish so I went to a nearby bank. Someone cut in front of us but being I was going pretty slow it’s not like the tried to beat me to it. We settled in way behind them in a decent spot and got to catching right away.
My wife would rather net than fish and was able to keep her happy for the time she was with me.
Had she stayed all day I would have worn her out! Had a great afternoon and evening catching fish shallow on swim jigs, chatterbaits and jigs. Swim jig worked anywhere I threw it. Rock, wood, cattail edges, clean water and off colored water. Wouldn’t work in some warm muddy water ( 55 degrees🙄)but I had a chatterbait ready on my only new piece of equipment I bought this winter. New rod worked great and had a blast catching with it.
Back to back 4.5 lbers.
Made a move to a similar spot that’s usually a bit dirty also trying to keep the chatterbait bite going. It kind of worked but not like the jig did. Fish were holding tighter to cover and not chasing bait like the last stop but it was still a great bite and lots of fun! Was a nice change of pace too and I was fishing with afternoon sun right in my face😎
Two of the last three stops were great. The last one so good it sent me home early! I was shot from catching by the end of the day. I left them biting but left them for Brandon to finish the night there. From what I can tell he did just that. I called to tell him I was on fish and was catching them every cast. I think he was a bit skeptical of that until he got there. Fish were going crazy chasing bait in a small area where the water temp had hit 64.5 which was seven degrees warmer than the warmest water I found.
Decided to stay over Sunday night so we could enjoy every bit of the warm weather. Glad we did but too bad it did not last. Monday was cool and dreary to start and down right cold by days end with a strong north wind blowing 10-15 and at times harder. For the most part I stayed away from Saturday’s hot spots being conditions had changed so much. Planned to concentrate on rocks instead. Pretty much started and ended the day with a squarebill. Hopped a round a bit and got as far north as Sheephead Island before the wind got real bad. As it turned out it was for the best. First stop on the way back kept me there for hours. Caught lots of smaller males, lots of 2-3 lbers and three 4-2 to 4-9. Fish were on the feed and several had 7-8” perch in their throats and looked like more in the bellies.
Lake has been good to me so far. Seems the cold weather hasn’t hurt that much but it could just be timing. I’ve fished after a warming trend and during a warming trend each time. If the weather is what they say this week I think my luck has run out!
Water temps still pretty low at 53 on Monday. Clarity very good though. Not much muddy water anywhere around Larrabee’s and to the north. Lots of stuff working too. Pick your favorite technique and it should work . And if you’re like me and you like pike.......
They’re baaaaaack!
