Finally a good day weather wise for fishing. Almost perfect but for a bit of wind late afternoon and into the evening. Was able to duck it anyway and find fish where I did.
Was pretty confident I’d catch them good yesterday but really didn’t expect I’d catch them like I did given the unusually cold and dreary weather we have had this month.
Water temp very cool for late April at 47 to start the day. Fish did not seem to mind. First fish of the day was a pike on a medium diving crankbait in about six FOW on rock. Second came on the next cast on the same
20.25”, 4-1
Moving along I found a few LM on a square bill in rock also but very shallow, less than 3 ft.🤔 Turned out is was not a fluke. Found a mix of SM and LM on a shallow ledge. Some were on the drop some were on top very shallow. Square bill and Trap got the shallow fish. Jerk bait and medium diver caught the deeper ones. Before I left I had a dozen. Best start I’ve had in a long time!
Tried some similar spots that didn’t produce but by then the sun was up high and the wind had laid down low. Hoped the conditions were right for some bank fishing for LM. It was and some SM too close to the main lake as well as one nice 3+ SM way back in a bay. Just then I figured I could do no wrong, until I did. Got some nice fish in brush and lay downs on a jig but also set on lots of nippy bites only to snag wood. Being low on the color that was working I got cautious setting the hook. That cost me a 5 lber 😢 Then after several chunks I knew I should re-tie but didn’t and that cost me another 5 lber🤬. Good thing I don’t fish for a living.
Did get a chance to redeem myself when a giant hit my swim jig. And I lost that one too. Good bite, hook stuck good but not good enough I guess. Well as the optimists say you can’t lose them all.
20.75”, 5-6
Late afternoon the LM were crushing a swim jig. So much so I never put it down until late when fishing a wind blown rock point. There I had the best Trap bite in sometime. Jerkbait worked too and so did the squarebill but if I can get them to eat a Trap that’s what I’ll use.
Ended the day close to the ramp with a three fish flurry. Always nice to leave them biting.
Lake was real nice. Good water color everywhere. Quite a day. Warm, low winds most of the day. Caught more fish on crankbait in one day than I did all last year I bet. Nice mix of LM and SM. Going to be a long week at work!
