Last few weeks has been fun now that I have finally gotten some topwater bites. It’s only been an early and late thing for the most part given the days I’ve fished have been sunny without hardly a cloud in the sky, and at times kind of windy. But if conditions are right the first and last hour of the day has been good.
Too bad nothing else has been all that great for me. Not much in some very reliable places doing things I like to do and more or less the same fishing how I don’t like to fish. So on Friday when I was able to get out of work early and fish the late afternoon until dark I decided all I was going to do was fish toads, frogs and other topwater stuff. No real big ones Friday but pretty steady action fishing shallow in the thicker grass near mats. Toads seemed to draw the most strikes but frogs worked too. Had a big bowfin on a frog but it didn’t stay hooked😏 Worked the mat with a frog and thinner weeds with a buzzbait but never had a strike over a mat or in thin weeds.
Saturday fished much like Friday. We took it easy all day and headed to the lake arriving at 4. A tourney out of Ti was just ending. My wife has never seen or heard that much commotion and was glad I didn’t bring her out earlier. By the time we launched the noise was over and the lake was as calm as a farm pond.
Went back to Friday’s hot spot and started catching right away but this time not bass or bowfin. The big pickerel had taken up residence in my spot. Moved a bit and did find some bass.
The wind came up and wrecked the spot so we made some moves that didn’t work. Decided we’d quit at Sunset but that still left me time to hit one more spot. If I was by myself I’d have been there until dark and might have caught a ton of them but I quit on time as promised after boating five on a popper.
Sunday was a lousy day. Too much wind, too much noise and not too much action. Water was all muddied up and blown out. Didn’t feel like dealing with it so I quit early. Was really one of the worst days I ever had all things considered. Need to find a quieter place to fish on the busy days, but afternoon and evening it’s sure nice on the lake.
