Went up to camp solo Wednesday night and without anyone to talk any sense into me I went a little crazy Thursday morning.
Haven’t been able to find an early morning alewife bite this year but was hearing of some still around during the FLW tourney around the Lachutte area so I left the camper at 3:15 and was on the water before 4😎 Early morning is just gorgeous on the lake!
Made a few quick stops before going to my destination but figured I had time being it was so early and I’d have no company for a while. Wrong! Some bow fisherman saw the feeding frenzy I was looking for and put down the bows and picked up the poles. They had a mess on the stringer by the time I got there. Asked if we could share the spot and they said sure.
Started with a spook and got three or four real fast, nice 3-3.5 lb chunks with bellies full of alewives. Kept the bite going by switching to a swimbait. Pretty much the same result. Downsized to keep the bite going until the bigger ones turned into smaller ones.
Decided it was time to try another spot I have been talking myself out of fishing because it is another numbers spot and not a big fish spot. Don’t know what the heck has been going on in my head this year🤔 I’ve always been happy to catch numbers and even happier when a big one shows up. Like this one that ate my small swim jig.
Got a bunch more and bigger that average from this spot all on the smaller swim jig. Didn’t go big at all with the swim jig at least because I needed bites after a way too slow vacation week.
Hit some inside weed lines and banks catching fish most everywhere. Fished the chatterbait a lot but really had to work it to get bites. Got a few in some nice grass on a jig too. Tried a Senko😱but that did not work for me, almost never does, crazy.
Very hot by mid day so I quit early and spent the afternoon at the pool with my wife where I got busted by some campers who heard me leave. Wife was not happy😆😆
but I think she understood my need to get on some fish. In fact she wanted to go out Friday morning but by the time she was ready I could tell it was too hot for her so we made plans to hang at the pool and fish the evening.
Good plan. It was slow until late evening but we whacked them at one classic early summer location.
She was a real trooper. Netting for me and taking pics and all the while needing to pee. She begged me on the way in to not hit any bumps!
Saturday got right back on them at the same spot the evening before. Caught them good until the tourney boats showed up. I was not going to stay anyway but some a-hole came right up to me on plane, drops the TM and cuts between me and the weedbed I was fishing. What is wrong with people? Decided not to start an altercation but I was not going away without making some kind of statement. So I put my stuff away, drove around his bow, along his starboard and stern and then port side. Cleared my motor several times of weeds unnecessarily and then moved on to my next spot and started catching again😎
Hit a few spots I haven’t been to yet. Finally got one on a Senko after throwing everything else I had to a piece of cover.
Flipped some nice milfoil and got some more chunky bass. Fish are really looking good in the Ti area. Imagine Benson too. Hopefully by now the bridge area is coming around too. Lake nice and clean until Saturday’s t storm. Lake was a mess Sunday and although the morning
bite was still on by 8:30 the fishing died. Wind was real bad too and I could feel and sense the cold front so I quit early to get some chores done.
Heading back this weekend. Going to fish after the tournaments. Sounds like it will be real busy again.
