Last weekend was my first couple days for this year. Saturday day got good number but nothing big and Sunday really felt the rust where I had lots of self inflicted wounds with fishing equipment, boat control, etc.
Got back up during the week to fish Thursday and Friday. Had a great day Thursday in a steady south wind. Morning kind of slow with 7 LM, few pickerel and pike. Had to work for them and caught fish in different cover on different baits and no real clue what would work consistently. Afternoon went away from moving baits on a whim and started dragging a jig. Bingo! Caught several footballs from one small area and a 10 lb drum. When that spot petered out thought about other spots with same bottom and went to try them. Was rewarded with a 5lb 5oz lunker, few more footballs, and another 10lb drum at a community hole. Ended up catching 8 or more over 2.5 hours in the afternoon which was more then I caught over 5 hours in the morning. A good day for sure. Pictures on FB if you are a friend.
Friday was total reversal with a brisk northwest wind that got stronger as day went on. The two best spots from Thursday were very exposed to a NW wind. One worse then the other. Fished where I got the lunker fighting the wind. Shallow anchor would have been damn handy. But managed to pick up one about 2 1/2 and another 10 lb drum. I do see why some of you fish for them. Hit hard and fight harder! From there got out of the wind in a back water we did well in over the weekend to come up empty except for pike so got out of there. To another somewhat back water on NY side and got my second bass on a Tokyo rig that was all of 1 1/2 lb and more pike/pickerel. Tried swimbait where we had luck over weekend to have some monster pike or bowfin come up and just swallow it. Line was cut before I even set the hook. Left for a partially protected bay and picked up 3 lb 3oz on a jig. But nothing else but bumps on the jig. Switched up to an old school crank I picked up off the bargain rack at Walmart for a buck and a half. Always like the color (bought the 3 they had like 4 years ago) but never had any luck with them. But Friday whacked a 4lb very shallow and then a 3 1/2 over the weeds then this monster drum that went 15-17 lbs and while I got it to the boat with 12lb test it flopped and snapped me off taking my crank. She had it deep with just the lip outside the mouth. Fished some more and only managed a really nice crappie. 14" and weight just a hair under 1 1/2 lbs. That was dinner! Lake was cranking going south back to the launch which made for a fun ride. Only 5 bass all day but could have been worse. Nice to finally get back out. Hope to get back up next week for at least one day if not two before off on vaca out west for a week and a half. Tight lines all.
