It took until the middle of May but finally some good fishing. Pretty much anywhere and anything worked. Well almost anything.
Smartest move Iβve made all year was to quit looking for crappie. Nobody finding them on the CTR and seems no one on Champlain either.
One night I fished bluegill and caught the heck out of them. Six in a row over 9β.
Another night took the wife trout fishing on South Pond in Marlboro like two days after they stocked ππ I was real proud of her because she put away her trusted worm and fished a spoon. To tell the truth she may have out fished me. For sure she had the catch of the day, a nice holdover brown.
Friday we headed north. I was itching to hit East Creek again but had some chores around the camperπ’
Before going to sleep I asked if I could get out early and be back early Saturday morning. Got a green light π
Really had to fish to catch them for the most part but if presented right most anything would work including crappie jig fished in a deep hole and a small crankbait just for kicks!
Only thing that went wrong all week was the wind on Saturday. Was supposed to be NW at 10-15 and then shifting NE and 5-10 in the afternoon. Reports from the lake said wind was not too bad but at the campground it was blowing pretty good and 58 degrees. Yeah not bad but not good enough to get the wife out.
Launched around 12:30 from Lapham Bay. Bunch of bow fisherman there from out of state and a few local commercial pan fisherman. Those guys must be struggling with this weather. Not too much chop but a bit breezy. Water kind of dirty and only 58 degrees when I dumped the boat in. Headed straight for a bay that was epic for bass years ago but only once. Itβs almost always good for a Master Angler pickerel which I think was more of a draw for me than bass, at least to get started with.
Like most of my plans this year it kind of failed but not the worst fail by any means. Caught a bunch of nice bass on a swim jig and a few more on a jig in buck brush but only one 23β pickerel . Some of the bass were way back in the middle of it. Made me wonder how many may have been buried in the stuff all year? Sure makes lots of hiding places when water is over 100β.
Had some points and hard spots up that way that you just canβt overlook so I changed it up and got out a squarebill and a jerkbait.
Water color was excellent on the main lake and really good most everywhere. Fish ate both lures equally well but the biggest and most ate the square bill.
Almost broke 5 at 4-14.
Got cloudy and windy in the evening. Things seemed to slow down on the main lake. Moved to a bay. Picked up the swim jig but never threw it. Took it off and tied on a spinnerbait given the conditions. Bass were crushing it. Overcast skies and a good chop in clear water I always throw black with gold blades.
4-7, 20.25βπ
By far my best day and best week too. Donβt think I lost a fish all day, which is big because I have been having a bad run of that lately.
Hope this coming weekend is as good and the weather holds. I think the fishing has yet to peak.
