Been tough fishing for me since the middle of ice fishing season and itās continuing thru open water. Fishing around home was good for numbers at ice out but went to crap like the weather.
Felt lucky though to have decent conditions last weekend and also fortunate to have no down time when my trolling motor malfunctioned the week before.
Also lucky me and Brandonās schedules matched up and we were able to fish together because I really needed another line in the water for feedback.
Long story short we didnāt catch them like I hoped. My best spots on the main lake produced a few fish and most were SM with a LM here and there but overall way smaller than usual. Moving baits were almost futile. The ones I got were mostly on a jerkbait, bright color of course, a few on a Trap, of courseš but NONE on a crankbaitš¤
Being the plan was to fish main lake until mid afternoon and then go into back bays for the evening bite we had plenty of time to do some drum fishing.
First stop almost had me change my plan being it was dead but being I needed one more fish for my 2019 Master Angler pin we hit another spot. Glad we didš
I got my pin fish and Brandon got his first ever and set the bar for his PB pretty high at 15-13. You have come far Grasshopper!
We headed back up north and toughed it out until most guys quit around 3 and hit a back bay or two. Actually did fair at times but expected better. Guess thatās why no pics, waited for a 5 lber hat never came. Brandon weighed a few of his that went better than 4.5, but we never took the time to photograph. My mistake. Moving baits worked there. May even have been a topwater bite or twoš
Quit when the fish quit around 7. Had a very short day on Monday but tried some new main lake spots with same exact result, average size SM and a few LM.
Hit a ditch in our best back bay at the end of the morning and had a hook setting fest. Left them biting which was okay because they were all under 3 but had a blast on a spinning rod nonetheless. All on the same finesse jig that got most bites for me on Saturday.
Anyway, kind of a bust but happy to be here once again. Good news is not all has been bad. Our annual fiddlehead/sucker trip couldnāt have been better.
If anyone thinks Iām crazy for sucker fishing I can explain. Me and my best friend spent lots of time together fishing suckers. We were actually professionals being we got paid a dollar a fish by an older Polish gentleman in our neighborhood š and it may sound kind of weird but since Georgeās death it really is a spiritual thing for me. Add in the fact that they are hard fighters and itās something big my wife is good at catching and you have the makings of a fun day, for us āpro junk fishermanā anyway.
Wind is keeping us grounded today. Down to East Creek sometime for some more trout like last night..... I hopeš
