Decided to take a vacation day on Friday after seeing the last weather forecast Thursday. So glad I did as I sit here on this absolutely dismal Saturday.
Friday was a beautiful day, clear and calm all day and though it was cold 27 degree to start the day it never felt that way and at times was down right warm when the light breeze would stop. The autumn color still very vibrant and highlighted by the snow capped Adirondacks and Green mountains.
Of course what really matters most is water temp and conditions. Those were just fine too, 39-40 in Beadles Cove, 46-48 on the main lake. Water was not that beautiful clear greenish color but it was as clear as I’ve seen in a long time. Plenty of weed too and algae free!
Pulled out four rods to get started. Was hoping to find fish off the weedline that would take a Rat-L-Trap. No takers, probably too calm. Chatterbait got the same results though I think something turned off on it leaving a huge boil right behind the path of the lure. Spinnerbait was next. Fail. Was down to my swim jig with a Little Dipper trailer. Couple casts later the skunk was out of the boat.
Repeated the rotation a few times as I moved along and the scenario was the same, small swim jig caught all the fish. Rigged up another rod with a swim jig of nearly the same color and a Skinny Dipper trailer. Fished that a while without a bite. Went back to the little swim jig. Worked again.
By days end I had caught dozens of fish and they all came on the smaller swim jig presentation. Often happens that the first fish will tell the story for the day but rarely or maybe never have I seen a day where the fish were obviously feeding but would only take one lure and a very specific one at that.
Great day, lots of fish including pickerel and pike. May have caught the most pickerel in one day ever. Pike not so much. Landed three. Never got bit off once all day😎
Only two others fishing , very quiet out there. Nice. Love this time of year, too bad it’s so brief.
