Been too busy to post lately and to be honest bass fishing has been mediocre. But about the time the bass cooled off the pike fishing heated up big time. Fishing suddenly changed for me the third week of August. Up until then it had been a great summer bite. Was really surprised the bite was as good and as long lived as it was. I knew at some point I was going to go bust with the water falling as fast as it was and many of my best spots this year had been community holes more or less and with all the pressure it’s a miracle they held up like they did. Other big producers had been some coontail beds that are now dead and some shallow milfoil that I got big bites from with a toad. Probably would never had done as well had I not received a magic lure from Master B this past Christmas😉👍
Hottest lure I have seen in a long time but as of late even the pike don’t like it much🤔 They now are on the spinnerbait, buzzbait and swim jig diet.
Lots of nice pike and few good bass has been the norm since September. Been working Saturday from 4-12 and running up to camp for the afternoon bite. Works out good. Tourneys are weighing in while my wife and I launch. Lots of action on Saturday afternoon, mostly pike and lots of them and a few good bass .
Might actually be catching more bass but the pike have been so thick that to cut down on lost Tackle I have gone to wiring anything I can. Went thru all my old spinnerbaits and beat up swim jigs in just one outing. Bought some cheap spinnerbaits from Runnings but they get twisted up like a pretzel when a big pike takes a bite so I got some War Eagle Trokar’s that have the old style line tie where you can attach a snap from a wire leader but had a good pike break one of those in the net and another break off the main line behind the leader. Another order from TW coming up😱
In a nutshell catching not great but fishing has been. No crowds lately, some nice flat water in the evening followed by some awesome sunsets and lots of fun fishing with my wife. Unfortunately I’m doing most of the catching and she’s doing most of the netting. Our goal was for her get a 30+ pike. We’ll have to wait until next year because the camper comes home Saturday 😭
Been a great summer for wildlife watching too. Not just the usual bird life either.
Moose in Benson
Bears near the Fort that I saw one Sunday and then Brandon got a pic on Tuesday. First time I have ever seen three cubs!
And what is with all the squirrels crossing the lake? On average I see at least one every time out. And on the road we counted 37 dead ones from Brandon to Dummerston.
This past weekend fished with Brandon. Toad bitein the morning, pike bite mid morning to mid day and then a late flurry of bass in some nice green milfoil. Bite was a bit off where we fished probably due to dirty water. Nothing big, best was 3-14 that Brandon got on a Senko. I did not get any on a Senko but I got one Senko from a bass.
I bet he was relieved after we did emergency hemoroid surgery on the water clipping it off the line coming out of its butthole.
Grass is nicer now than it’s been all year.
If the water would clear and cool off it could be a very good fall😎 Tons of bait around too. Many appear to be gizzard shad. When they are around you’ll catch fish. Not real big but real flashy. A spinnerbait with with silver blades size #3 mimicks them well. I’ve caught more bass on SB this past month than I have in the last few years combined. Been some days where the SB is the top producer for bass.
Lots of bass had this red rash in August but not seeing it now.
Of course by the time I get back up everything will be different. Probably can’t get back until later in October. Hoping for more bass and a few less pike. We’ll see.
