Was supposed to work Saturday and had planned on fishing the river Saturday and Sadawga on Sunday. I was actually looking forward to it. But I was given a pass for Saturday and that got me to thinking. Still planned on fishing the river and cutting out the long drive back and forth to Champlain. Friday night we went out for dinner and crossed the river in two places. No way! Too high, too much current and too dirty. On top of that a tournament was on for both days. Was I going to stay home to fish Sadawga? Nope 👎 Headed to Champlain in the morning on practically no sleep. Lots of bad stuff going on had me really stressed out, but I got there around🤔hell no idea really. Oh yeah no I got it, just as a Northern Open boat pulled into Chipmans. Now remember I was tired as I thought to myself “why would someone come all the way down here to fish these docks?” And then another? Oh, yeah, to get gas dummy!😏
Got off to a good start. Nice chunk on first cast and another on third cast on a toad. Took a short recess to trade some baits with Brian D. His stuff worked for me later on fishing vertically in coontail. Hope mine work for you Brian.
The first four casts were pretty much the best part of my day. Hit a lot of spots, tried a lot of baits, but nothing really clicked though by days end I had rallied quite a few fish just none were too big. Had steady pike action too, especially around Dooley Point South. Be warned! Cost me a beat up toad and couple very used swim jigs.
By 3:30 or so the skies began to threaten and I made my way south making a few stops along the way and catching fish a bit more steadily. That calm before the storm bite I guess but I played it smart and got off before all hell broke loose. Sitting pretty in the truck hoping the rain would let up enough to drive, yeah that bad, I see a guy walk up the road from the dock. I stick my head out the window and get instantly soaked as I ask if he needs help. Of course he did 😫
He never would have managed by himself because the wind had his boated pinned to the dock and it was tough moving it off with two of us. We both were in water up to our necks in a t storm, not good. I gave him a minor @$$ chewing telling him he needs to be smarter. God knows I’d never done anything that dumb🙄🤐
Lake was a nasty as I have ever seen in it, maybe worse.
Was a little wet but no problem being I had towels and clothes with me.
Headed back to camp but on the way the rain stopped and the t storm was heading east to camp. Made sense to me to relaunch from Larrabee’s and stay out of the storm versus driving back into it. Lake seemed all messed up after the storm. Lots of loose weed and dirty water. Current running back north was crazy on the point south of Ti ramp. Shoulda been a feeding frenzy going on there but nothing worked. Not much really worked anywhere but lots of bait fish activity and bowfin were on the feed. Quit around 8:15.
Got a good sleep and hit the water early Sunday. Started where I saw all the activity the night before. Probably my best start of the year. All good ones on a toad and one big one.
21.25” 5-10 LM
Planned on a short day so hit what work d Saturday and it actually work d better Sunday. Toad bite lasts for hours. Eventually it died when the sun and the wind woke up. Tried it in protected areas but no luck. Same with the frog. Tried using the wind. That worked.
19.75” 4-9 LM
Another 21.5” 5-10 LM on same swim jig.
Made myself quit and get off before it got too hot. Almost 20 hours of fishing and five hours of driving is enough for someone my age🤥😉
Lake again was in good shape. Good color and good weeds. Fish are using the abundant coontail as well as milfoil and eel grass. Storm from Saturday blew the cheese away but it will be back and so will I. The river will have to wait😉
