Fished out of Larrabee’s twice this weekend and left convinced that the summer bite has peaked. Near perfect conditions on Saturday weather wise and very good conditions on the lake. Level is low and still dropping, down a few inches since last week, but water clarity in general was up.
Dirtiest water I saw I’d describe as dingy, cleanest was gin clear. Dingy held many fish, gin clear 0. Though not a lot of weed there is enough and it’s in good shape. No tournaments and very quiet for a Saturday.
Being I got a late start I just idled out of the bay and started fishing in what little shade that was left on the east side. First cast with a KVD Splash got two bites, one 2 lb. smallie. Hooks popped out on the first hit but when the plug popped back up it hit again, or it had a friend with it.
No more topwater bites but got a quick limit on swim jig. Made a game plan as I finished my coffe. Decided to fish my way north and try to stay away from spots I’d been hitting hard. Tough to do but I did until 12 when my wife met me but that was part two of the plan. She was kind of bored our last trip so I tried to save fish for when she arrived. Glad I did, the plan worked great!
Kept her busy netting, picture taking and guessing the weight of fish we caught.
Best of the day, 4-8, 20”
She nailed the first few😉👊but was way off on this one. She said 5-3, it was 4-3, but let’s go with what she said😆
Couldn’t get her to fish but that’s how she rolls. Sometimes just loves to be a spectator, sometimes she fishes hard but always likes being on the water no matter what😎
Caught them all day on moving baits. Never once threw anything but though if I had I’m sure I would have got them that way too. Could see lots of life in the grass, fry, gills, bowfin etc. Sound of gills snapping under all the mats. Tried the frog of course and got none of course😂
Perfect day. Got one on the first cast and left them biting at 4:30 because we had a pot luck dinner at the campground at 6.
As perfect as Saturday was, Sunday was almost the opposite. Lots of rain to start and lots of wind near the end.
In between the fishing was good. Repeated what I did the day before but without as good results. Figured the heavy rain was the reason. Still pretty good action just not as good. When the rain stopped things did click but only after I changed my technique. Put down the swim jig and took out my toad rod. Worked right away and for a good hour or so that’s all I needed until the sun popped out. That will kill a toad bite most days🙁
With the sun came a wind shift and some near calm conditions. Moving baits died. Was going to fish grass but changed my mind. Have been missing worm fishing lately, actually for a long time and was dying to get the 10” worm in the water. Ran to a community hole and started worm fishing. It’s crazy how little fish will bite that thing. Curiosity I guess, but before long it started finding bass. Some good ones too. Love the anticipation of the bite with a big worm though often it leaves you a bit disappointed. Wasn’t into picture taking Sunday so you’ll just have to use your imagination. I got another 18” LM that weighed 4-8 on Sunday, just crazy!!!!
Have to mention the spinnerbait bite Sunday. Worked well when it was raining for bass and pike. Usually does in those conditions. Does it work for you?
