Just spent the last week on Champlain. Best vacation week ever! We did a lot of fishing, kayaking and sightseeing and had good weather for the most part.
Saturday was a gorgeous day and we just hung out at the cottage and took in the surroundings.
My first cast off the dock produced a nice smallie that was guarding fry. He was one of the last bedding fish I saw in the bay. Would have loved to had been there a few weeks ago at the peak of the spawn. We caught lots of SM nonetheless and prespawn LM were beginning to pile in so I wish we had another week there.
Bass werenโt the only thing we caught after a big north wind muddied the water.
Yes that is a bobber and yes to the worm below it. Wasnโt going to let the wife have all the fun๐คฃ
Good news is I still do have another weeks vacation and will be staying at the camper ๐
A wicked north wind kept me in on Monday but being I didnโt โforce itโ, a term my wife always uses to describe my determination for fishing or just about anything for that matter, I earned a free pass to fish as much as I wanted for the rest of the week๐๐ Amazing what a sight seeing trip to the islands and lunch at the Old Dock in Essex NY can get me๐
Tuesday I was physced to hit the lake. It had been three weeks and though the other places I had been weโre good to me there is only one Champlain. Launched at the bridge and planned on covering water from Bulwagga to the paper mill. Never made it that far south. No need. Plenty of fish, good clean weeds and water in the bridge area. Bulwagga was a bust but anything a bit north or south was good. Had places on both shorelines that were reliable. The better ones had alewives present. I knew after the first day I woul not being going far south or north from the bridge.
One of three bass that weighed 4-9 came off one of the bridge abutments as did many other smaller ones.
The only smallie I actually saw while on the boat. Just had to catch him.
The fish off the bridge all ate a Ned Rig, every other bass came on chatterbait, swim jig, Chug Bug, Spook, toads and frogs. Did get an odd fish or two on a jig and a few on spoons while trying for pike. Top producer was probably a chatterbait. My favorite color of late did not work. I remembered Brian telling me they did good at Benson on alewife colored baits. I probably would have figured it out sooner or later because I knew alewives were present and water was clear but sooner was better! Thanks B!
Water was still pretty cool, 63-70 thru the week and still lots of prespawn bass, especially on the main lake but the post spawners are back on the feed. Early morning bite was super on Friday! Got all my fish on topwater before the sun hit the water. Fishing was still good until mid morning but got tougher around noon time so I quit early and went swimming at the cottage. That main lake water will cool you off fast.
All in all a great week.
Hope to find fish around the Ti area this week and maybe Benson too, but I got a feeling there is one more bridge trip coming up๐
