That’s a good question from what I’ve seen. Haven’t had time to report because, we’ll for one been busy fishing and even busier around the house getting things done so I can go fishing. Now sitting around the campfire with some time on my hands being my wife said I had to sit still when I sugggested we go for cats. Party pooper!
Last weekend I stayed away from Champlain on opening morning of tournament season and spent most of the day at Chittenden Reservoir. I knew after three casts I made a good choice. Thought I was getting post spawn smallies but once the sun got up a bit I could see most were guarding fry and a few were protecting eggs. Surprised me the spawn was at that stage. Back home the spawn is done except for the major procrastinators. Things up here are not quite the same as back home I have discovered.
Saw a few huge largemouth there that sure looked prespawn to me and landed a fatty or two that had eggs. My biggest LM came on pan fish tackle and baits that I was throwing during a lull in the bass action. Was targeting the numerous spawning sunnies that the largies were possibly sizing up for a snack. They may have been looking for fry too because they were taking my 1.5” shad regularly enough that I didn’t put it down when fishing around the green fish. Smallies on the other hand would only hit something that threatened their fry. Bomber in a perch pattern drove them insane.
That was a fun day. Went to Champlain after the tournaments finished. That was not fun. Had to rely on a prespawn honey hole for my only keeper. Granted the wind, weather and water quality sucked but not as bad as the fishing.
We reiterated that on Sunday. Ti area was a mess and we found no big post spawn fish that my partner was looking for. What did seem to work was fishing shallow for spawners or post spawners that had returned or never left.
Water down below Benson had better clarity and weeds than what we found around Ti.
To me best fishing right now would be main lake for spawning smallies and largies. Two weeks ago we were north of the bridge where the water temp was......and it may sound crazy but my three temp gauges all said 51 degrees. That was the morning after a big north wind blew so hard on Champlain I would not even launch that day. Ended up on Hortonia and at least had a safe day of fishing catching a dozen or so largemouth and a ton of gills and sunnies.
Sorry about pics but I have lost the USB cable for my camera. Went back to that recently because my phone gets pretty slimy after a day of selfies.
Would like to share a few pics of some of my fishing partners though
It’s back to Chittenden again tomorrow. Don’t want to deal with all the commotion at the LCI. Hopefully wife can get some smallies and perch action. If not I’m sure she will enjoy watching the loons who are nesting there. Maybe I’ll even figure out how to get some of those big LM that I nearly caught last weekend😎
