Had Friday off and the plan was to take my wife to Lewis Creek to pick fiddle heads and drown some worms so we slept in , for us, which meant we were up at 7. Actually we were up all night anyway as allergies had my wife sneezing and coughing all night. At 8 she decided she couldn’t go☹️ but that meant I was free to go fishing 😁
The weather forecast and wind forecast the day before had me thinking north of the bridge for SM until I got word from the schodackbassman he was staying put due to a big north wind.
I went to Larrabee’s to see first hand. Yeah, big wind for sure. No north of the bridge trip for me. Cooked up a plan and launched. Water temp was 58 and level appeared higher than what TV report said. Fished in the bay for sometime catching some decent bass here and there. Decided to go up the Lachutte and hide out there after trying to fish outside Beadles Cove briefly.
Fishing in the river or the setbacks off the Creek can be okay but not likely you can have a big day. But you can have some fun and it’s easy fishing. I actually did better than I hoped catching one nice four pounder and some nice 3 plus prespawn females. Tubes and finesse worms in the Creek, crank baits along the railbed and swim jigs in the cattails. Got the odd fish here and there on a chatterbait and an even odder fish on a jig and pig.
27.5” bowfin. What a fight!
First cat of the year, 28”, ate a square bill. He missed it once but cats will usually hit again if you throw back.
Afternoon came quickly and so did a break I’m the wind. Hit some spots that had been hot but they cooled off on Friday. Seems fish that were stacked on points have maybe moved closer to spawning areas. Bays reached 63 by days end. Don’t know about backbays, been staying out of them. Not a bad day except for loosing a big smallie after a lengthy battle. Just when I thought he was done I felt the crank bait wiggling and knew he was off.
Saturday we did Lewis Creek. Caught some nice smallies off beds and saw lots more making there way upstream. Crazy how far they travel on that spawning run. We missed the fiddle heads and seems the sucker run too but my wife did catch some “cute” rainbows who some day hope to be steelhead. They have a lot of growing up to do.
Sunday forecast sounded bleak except for a wind shift midday so after pondering where to go I figured why not Larrabee’s again. Seemed the forecast may have kept others away. Empty lot until 8:30. I know because I spent 1.5 hours in the bay catching some nice bass, a few pike and one of the lakes most beautiful fish.
27.5” pike/pickerel hybrid. One powerful fish! Better fighter than a pike and bigger than a pickerel.
Concentrated my efforts close to spawning areas but hit any points as I passed them. Small fish mostly on points but what they lacked in size they made up for in numbers.
Have some pretty beat up looking crankbaits after the last few weeks!
Found what I was looking for in the back of one bay I had visited recently and got nothing. Sunday they were there and on the feed. Could pretty much catch them on anything practical. Got started with a spinnerbait ( always bet on black) being windy and overcast. Refished the area with a swim jig, twice. Took out the pitching rod and rigged up a Beaver hitting all the tight spots. That was deadly. No idea how many I landed but it was a lot. May have been one of my best days ever for numbers of quality fish. No fives but several fours and more threes than I could ever count. If I still had that clicker ii would have blown it up. Bad news is these fish will probably spawn before I fish them again. They are ready to pop and with the warm weather coming they surely will.
Found the lake much lower on Sunday, maybe down six inches or so much like what was reported.
Got fish on seven different presentations including a buzzbait. Had that working in the afternoon. Been wanting to get that out but conditions have not been right.
Fished until 7:30. Too beautiful to quit at 5 when the lake completely laid down.
Lots of these guys in the backs of bays pecking at everything you throw at them.
Many of the strikes I had were immediately after the alewives were hitting ny lures. Wonder if they were attracting bass to my baits?🤔
Glad I stayed but the fishing did taper off in the evening. Nice having the camper to crash in for the night but I felt my age today at work today and it was a long ride in this morning. Maybe it’s time to slow down....... until this weekend😂
