Launched the boat for the first time yesterday. Glad I played it safe and fished the CTR and did not go to Champlain. As it turned out I probably would have had less action and absolutely miserable fishing conditions up north. It was barely manageable in Hinsdale but being being the fish were biting the cold windy conditions did not matter much. Air temp of 40 to start and water temp a surprising 48. Water temps in the setbacks ranged from 44-51 throughout the day and as usual the warmest water produced the most fish. No fish came from water under 46 and the biggest came from a small area of rocks where the water topped out at 51. No big ones yesterday but but the average was probably in the 2 1/4 lb. range and the biggest may have been like 3-2.
Had some success with moving baits but it was mostly a jig bite and wood was key. Tried out a Falcon Trap Master rod that was gifted to me by Brian and it was perfect! Guess it's time to retire my 1995 BPS Extreme casting rod to shore fishing duty our a back up. Trap caught one, chatterbait got two and though a medium diving crankbait got five good bites and some solid hookups I landed 0 😩. The rest came on a jig. Total fish caught was 26. Should have been more but boy did I loose a lot of fish one way or the other yesterday.
Spring is in full bloom despite the cold temps. Fishing from shore has been awesome. Birds are showing up too and trees are starting to bud. Feels more like late winter but nature shows otherwise. Geese are nesting, Ospreys are rebuilding the nest on top of a power tower, Eagles are busy too. Came out of the trestle yesterday and first thing I saw was an eagle in flight then just to the north a pair of loons. Took some pics but they kind of suck but will post later.
As I rode up the river to my starting spot I was so happy to make it thru another winter and so thankful I'm still here fishing and took a moment to remember those who were not and dedicated the year to their memories.🎣🎣🎣
