Trying to beat the heat we took the boat up to Somerset Reservoir Monday 8/30. It would have been a good day for frog fishing at Champlain but most likely we would have sweltered in the heat there. It was very pleasant at Somerset with a stiff NW wind blowing off of the 70 to 72 degree water. The lake level was a good four feet lower than it was on our last visit. And, a bonus, the 10 mile gravel road in had been recently graded with dust control put down.
Motored up into the wind to the NE side and fished back down toward the dam. Fishing from 12:00 to 6:30. I have never figured out how to catch bigger smallmouth bass there on bluebird days in the late summer. So we just fished. It took me an hour to catch anything as I was trying swimbaits, top waters, drop shot and a jig worm. Meanwhile, Diane is getting regular bites on various Mepps and a Beetle Spin. They wouldn't bite a topwater and they weren't on the bottom so...following Diane's lead I went sub- surface using mostly Zoom Fluke for the rest of the day. Between us we caught and released 32 sm (mostly between 11" to 13", biggest was a 16"er that hit a weighted Senko, but neither of us felt like Senko fishing), 2 perch and an 18" pickerel that hit Diane's Mepps.
Decided to go back there again on Tuesday. We fished from 11:30 to 5:30. Same conditions but we tried some different areas. Got out of the wind in some areas and could see the weed beds much better. Weeds held perch, and bass were usually nearby. One classic area (near deep water) held lots of bass but tons of aggressive perch. If I stalled the Fluke to sink it through the perch I'd see the bass come over and look at it but not bite. Tried a 5" Senko but the perch were murdering it, switched to a 4" green pumpkin color...no dice, but when I put on a 4" red with flakes caught four bass in a row. Never used it again the rest of the day . Had pretty good action on the Flukes, a BPS fluke knock off called a Shadee Shad, perch colored shallow crankbaits and Diane had her Mepps working. I only caught sm all day (22). But she caught 7 perch, 2 pickerel, an 11" Fallfish and 7 sm. None of the bass stretched more than 14" but few were less than 11"
Diane bags a typical smallmouth on a #3 Mepps.
A pretty day on the pond. Loons nested on the grass island here, don't know if they were successful or not.
A few "camp ground" ducks flew in and demanded handouts. Of course they got some. They flew off quickly when a group of Otters swam by close to us.
