It's seems like a long time since I've seen clean water on the south lake and forever since it's been clear and calm and the fish were biting. Had all three come together last weekend. To top it all off my wife came with me on Saturday for an afternoon/evening outing.
When we launched I was shocked to see the water temp at 79 in the bay at Larrabee's. Water was even good in there. Even thought about trying it inside but being we were looking for a big pike for her so we started outside. Fished places where we got them recently but they were not there. Tried other reliable spots and that did not produce either. Thought maybe the drastic change in water temp sent them out deep π€I switched to frogging while the wife rested. Got four on the frog which I think this year equates to a frog bite. No big ones but all good solid fish and hard hits. Made a move closer to the ramp fishing the outer weededges. Wife threw an in line spinner for white perch but only caught bassπ
I worked a buzzbait, swim jig and toad. Buzzbaits were what both pike and bass were wanted. Evening ended with a pike and two bass on the last three casts. While I was catching them on topwater my wife was busy feeding my tackle to pike. At least I can blame her for the next bill from tackle warehouse π
Sunday I had to rest. Been working way too many hours. Saturday I was up at 3:45 at work at 4:30, on the road north at 12:30 and on the lake at 4 pm, worn out but happy to be there. Started where we had good action the evening before but it was not happening. Moved to where they weren't the night before just to keep them honest. Being my wife was not there the fish of course wereπ± Why is it so hard to put others on fish? Pike were crushing buzzbait baits on this calm but foggy morning.
Had my best pike day ever by far. Nothing huge but except one hammer handle the rest were 24-32". Pike bite lasted well into the day but best bite was early on. Some nice bass then too. Best by far was this one.
21" 5-10 LM
Late afternoon I focused on bass. Caught plenty, most on swim jigs. Tried topwater with little
success. An odd one now and then on a frog or buzzbait. Quit before I got wanted to but had to be ready for another long week at work.
Slept at the camper and drove to work from there.
Hope the clear water is still around this weekend. It should be but it probably won't.
Champlain, you never know what to expect. Oh and another nice surprise:
A nice new dock st Benson Landing!
