My Daughter and I got out with my friend Dale today. We launched from his private dock around 0830 and proceeded to work areas around the inland sea...I have to say things started really slow and Madi lost interest and got into our lunch bag early for a snack. We fished the outer edges of weed beds and the 1 ounce green pumpkin tube jig started getting bit. after three bites, it was off as soon as it started (ok this will require some patience)...we fished up through to the bridge with little action, besides seeing a Bald eagle swoop into the water for a fish-just Awesome. We go through the bridge and start nailing Northerns...Since this is on my Master Angler list, I was looking for my 3 footer. I chucked a chart spinnerbait and Dale was throwing a sexy shad Crankbait. We basically were trading turns catching them as Madi swung the net. The strikes were vicious...bending up my spinnerbait to the point that I'm re-tuning after every landing...fun stuff. We then got into about 6 FOW with some sparse weeds and rock. I Threw a Reaction Innovations swimjig with a VMC drop dead 1/8 ounce hook and the smallies seemed interested...some hit right as the lure hit the water. Madi landed her personal best SMB (well over 3 pounds) to get her a master angler (youth) SMB. She was so excited-(maybe Dad was a little excited as well) Dale threw a topwater spook and started getting them fired up as well...landing several quality fish...some with teeth, and some with sandpaper mouths...we landed 50 today with half being snakes. Biggest one went over 8 pounds-Biggest bass was Madi's SMB.
I can feel the weather changing...and with that I think the fall bite up north is about 2 weeks away...this morning and this afternoon were so vastly different in regards to activity and interest (from the fish's point of view)
I hope everyone is getting out and getting quality bites. The best of the season is yet to come.
