Launched at the VTF&W access in Putney at 8:25 Friday. I took along a recent retiree who loves fishing but doesn't know too many bass tactics. My goal was to get him onto a few decent sized river smallmouths. I showed him how to fish a Zoom Fluke and a Buzztail Shad. He caught bass on both. Mission accomplished. We had a nice 5 hours of fishing and caught and released 9 Smallmouths, eight of which were 2 lbs. or so. The only one we put on the scale he caught and it tipped 2 lb. 5 oz. I had plenty of bites early on the Fluke but couldn't seem to hook up. Fished mostly gravel bars, looking for active fish. As usual lots of nice bass would follow but wouldn't commit. Perhaps next time. It was a pretty, bluebird day on the 70 to 72 degree water. Visibility 6' to 7' and little current . The current picked up some in early afternoon, but that was when I had to quit in time for work. Marty battles a river bass that ate his Buzztail Shad in 4' of water.
