Finally gave up trying to make things work on Champlain at sunrise. Wasn't sure my new plan would work either but it did.
Started the morning at Dunmore hoping for a topwater bite and no damn wind. Should have given in a month ago. No monsters at Dunmore but good steady topwater action the way it's supposed to be or how we always hope it will.
It was nice to get bit on the second cast instead of waiting for an hour or two or three before the fish living in the dirty water lake finally wake up and feed.
Left Dunmore around 9:30 and was fishing and catching on Champlain by 10:30🤗. My best spots have been shallow but I have thought if I find the right cover I could even fish shallower. For one day anyway it worked. Inside weed lines have been good for me but other shallow patterns like cattail, pads or shallow wood has not been good to me until Saturday. Pads were best, wood was good and I pulled a few from cattail too.
For the most part I had to fish slow and vertical with a Crawtube, Senko and worm but I did use some search baits to find and catch some good ones including my best in a long while a 20.5"
4-14 on a buzzbait.
Overall the quality was better too. Been catching plenty of 2-3 lbers. which is okay but 3-4' is much better. So I really thought I had things figured out.
Then came Sunday😡 Launched from Lapham Bay and fished north. Found good weeds up that way and found good fish too. Landed more weeds than fish. Just couldn't do anything right. The shallow pad pattern held a few fish and one of them was a corker but that went wrong too. At least the moving baits finally caught a few.
Been a while since bass fishing has been good but that doesn't mean fishing hasn't been good. Been taking any kid who wants to try out fishing this summer and it's been fun.
Catching plenty of bass, walleye and pike while pan fishing with light tackle and that's lots of fun too😉👍
