I learned not long ago a very effective technique for removing a hook that is deeply hooked in a LMB by going up through the gill plates to get at the hook. This works very well, but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for removing a hook from a SMB. I had a fish die on me in a tournament a couple of weeks ago that was deeply hooked. I could not figure an effective way to get at it, and just cut the line as close to the hook as possible. Looking for any suggestions.

Talk to rvq. He is the master. I was in the boat with him and he deep hooked several smallies. He got the hook out by going through behind the gills.

www.in-fisherman.com/content/through-gill-hook-removalI have used this method in the past. But I thread a foot or so of tag line throught the gill first. It's often not so easy, (the fish can get dry if I'm not hasty) but if the fish isn't already bleeding, then I think it has a pretty good chance (of survival).

Yup - this is the best way. I've done it lots and it works. The key is to leave as much tag end as you can. I like about a foot.

Thanks for the replies, I have learned that technique thanks to Bob. I had only ever used it for LMB. I think my problem was just a major brain fart. I did not think to slide the tube that I was using out of the mouth so I could actually see what I was doing. I am so used to fishing LMB that I don't have to think about getting the bait out of the mouth to see what I am doing

I'm confused Brock ... even with largemouth, mouth size is proportional to the fish size, so they must still have had tiny mouths ... ;D
