The bassbuddy crew probed the waters of Lake Carmi today. We didn't end up with even a single bass. We did score a handful of perch and a bunch of Walleye. We had to toss back a lot of them due to the slot limit thing they have there. It was a fun day fishing and watching the locals water ski and pull inflatables and water boards behind speedboats all around us. BB

Except for the boat wakes, it sounds like a fun day. Those 17'"-19" walleye must have put a bend in the rod.
The CT river has a more generous slot on walleye. In my experiences it seems to be working out. Keeping more female walleye in the river and out of the dining room.

We made another trip to Carmi yesterday. It was breezy and chilly and I regretted wearing shorts most of the day, but we had fun catching and releasing walleyes. They are fun when they nail crankbaits. We were casting Senkos and crankbaits for smallies and were still getting 'eyes. They lurk near the weedbeds to ambush baitfish. Also bagged some giant yellow perch in the 11-13 inch range. We kept a few for tablefare and released the rest. It's hard to beat walleye and perch for supper. p.s. you guys don't post much on this forum.. it won't grow if nobody contributes to it... just my observation... BB

UPS VT and I started this board (well, he did all the work, I just came up with the idea ;D) hoping we'd have a place where we could talk bass without getting hammered by the trout and salmon guys all the time like what happened on the Champlain board. But bass guys seem to be pretty tight-lipped about their trip reports for some reason .... Nice job on the 'eyes! I'd love to fish Carmi someday - just a long way from me.

I would report more if I got out more often. I have not had much time on the water this year. I do agree about the need for reports. I have never fished Lake Carmi before, knew it had walleye, but did not know about the good bass fishing.

Our club has a May tournament every every year at Carmi combining a bass paper tournament with a walleye tournament. We launch out of the state park launch. When we come in we have a walleye fish fry in the picnic area. I have yet to catch a legal eye, but the bass fishing is good. Bob

We've only been twice this year but we have had legal fish a lot , ie, 6 out of 9 were keepers, several in the 19-20 inch range, and only a couple that were in the slot, 17-19 inch range that had to go back. Not much Bass activity though. I'm not finding them in the area that I used to. I had hoped to report on Bass but pretty much only got 'eyes. Hope you guys don't mind reading about walleye on your Bass forum.. BB

"Hope you guys don't mind reading about walleye on your Bass forum." Don't mind at all, I caught a nice walleye on Champlain a couple of weeks ago during a tournament. Weighed about 5 pounds, just a guess did not weigh it. Had I just been fishing for fun would have been very happy with the catch. A little disappointing when I hoped it may have been a nice bass

Hi, I just found this message board. I have never caught a walleye. I fish mostly out of a kayak. If I was to fish Carmi for Walleye would I approach it as if I was fishing for Small mouth? Look for rock points with deeper water and then use spinners and or senkos?
Thanks!

Fishing for 'eyes on Carmi is mostly done by trolling deep diving crankbaits, ie, " Wally Divers " Hot-n-tots etc. also the old stand by, The green Mountain Grabber with a night crawler fished with a weighted line to get it down at least 15-20 ft. or so. Troll at 1.5-2 mph GPS speed and wait for the strikes. It's a 5 fish a day limit with a slot limit regulation in effect. The fish are scattered all over the lake. Weedy drop offs are good if you fish with a jig or want to cast crankbaits for them. Smallmouths are found around the weed beds and reefs. It's a fun lake to fish and very scenic. Eagles and loons are commonly seen there. Have fun.. BB
