Hi, I flyfish for bass and everything else that swims. Appreciate the opportunity to look at this forum and learn a bit more about bass habits and what is working for folks. Of course my lures are different, but I just translate what is working for you into flyfishing terms and try my best. See you on the water.

Cool. Where do you normally fish? Boat, shore, wade? Spent lots of time flyfishing for trout (and bass when I was a kid) but never invested in bass-sized gear so I’ve always felt super-limited and mainly throw traditional stuff. Post some trip reports or something, love to hear about your approach.

Hi MacIntosh, I fish wherever I am when I have some time, with whatever gear is handy. Pretty vague answer, I know. But I really am very opportunistic about my fishing. I live in Central VT, but I have a boat and I'm trying to get to know Champlain a little. I've mostly only fished the Northern part so far. As far as bass fishing, I also like to wade or float the bigger rivers for smallmouth in addition to taking the boat out. A 6 weight fly rod will do the trick for bass, but 8 weight is perfect, in my opinion. I use anything from a floating line to a full sink 7 inch per second line, and a variety of "flies", although lures is probably a better word. Most people in your shoes who have dabbled in flyfishing for trout have an old 8 foot 6 weight. That would work fine. I would fish that confidently with wooly buggers, clouser minnows, and a couple small poppers. Use something like 10 lbs (about 2x) tippet, and overall leader length usually less than 8 feet. A net is nice to have, since you're not going to be hoisting the fish or controlling them the way you could with a bass rod. I will post a trip report if we get into anything particularly interesting. Thanks

please do! (and, unfortunately a 4-weight is as heavy as I've got)
