Out for late perch bite after a fruitless morning. Got this lake trout up out of a 4" hole, in maybe 16" of ice, 4 lb. test, no gaff. Line broke just as I got ahold of the gills!

Looks like a good size for eating. Lakers are way better eating than people think. Baked, broiled, fried or smoked, just don't freeze them. One morning camping in Yellowstone I got up early, got two fresh lakers about 18-20" filleted them and served them with fried eggs and elk steaks and the best part of breakfast was the trout. My dad could not believe it being he had heard they were not good eating.
Glad you had such a nice surprise!

"Wow. Bet that took awhile to bring in! Yes - I thought it was a northern - in only 13' of water. I always thought lake trout were in 60' I have tried to find them out there! It was that old "flip the bail" and get a hand on the line kind of deal. I almost tried to keep a taught line and run over to my sled, about 30 ft. away, to get my strainer or whatever you call it, I have used the end of that as a gaff with pretty good success. I had just re-tied all of the knots on all of my rigs, and usually that is the kiss of death, because when I'm all ready, nobody bites.

I know it was not a bass, but it was some fun serendipity having a big fish like that be almost my only bite - and this fish WHACKED my gold Slender Spoon. Dinner is all planned for tomorrow night! Oh, and 7 lbs., 27". I want to get a smallmouth that big!
