I took the boat up into the Green Mountain National Forest and launched in the very full Somerset Reservoir yesterday. A typical July day there, few bugs, lots of wildlife, good fishing. Took about an hour to figure out the mood of the bass, typical. The big ones are hard to come by and the smaller ones are schooled.
The water temp was 78 with a light to moderate south wind when I got out at 10:30. Bass and perch were surface feeding here and there and I was able to catch 5 small mouths on a Sammy 100. Tried fishing on the bottom for a while and landed a 20" pickerel in 16' on a 4" power worm. The bottom usually isn't the deal there in mid -summer and wasn't this day either. But I had to try. Bass were suspended and the Senko and Super Fluke (green) was the deal. Bass were feeding on perch. I kept the boat over 10' to 18' fow most of the day.
Although I was only out 6 hours I caught and released 23 (or so, The Mrs. wasn't there with her tally sheet) Small mouths. About 15 of those would have been 12" keepers, with the best three being two 2 lbers. and one 2 3/4 lber. Also 5 Rock bass (all on the dropshot......put that rig away ), one yellow perch and the pickerel. Plus I saw loons, eagles and a group of 4 Otters. I tried to get a photo of the Otters but they came out lousy.
Biggest bass of the day came on this rig. It had someone else's 3/0 EWG Gama hook stuck in it's lip. It's mine now .
The business end.
