My Minn Kota 74lb Trolling Motor 42" shaft that needs to have the shaft replaced. Good news is shafts have life time warranty, bad news is you have to pay labor for repair which is pretty involved as it turns out. Can probably get repaired for under $200 and get a 90 day guarantee plus time it takes to get it repaired. I have a back up TM (52" but I don't like long shaft as they get in the way when flipping) so time not a real issue. If get repaired the end result is I'll have a 2002 motor (installed late 2006)that does what it needs too. Other option is to by a new MK 70 lb thrust for around $650 or better yet at 80 lb thrust (10 lb heavier motor) I found on Amazon for $925 with free shipping and probably no tax. What's the better choice in your opinions?

Hope you don't lose any fishing time. If you would never use the long shaft maybe the old one should be your back up once it's fixed. Mean time you could put the new one on that you probably want anyway. Don't cheat yourself Brian. It's time for you to enjoy life.

Funny Shawn, wife balked at new TM so don't think she'd go for a new rig. Even if it was a much lighter and much faster one then the one pictured.... My friend Jim can fix it if I get the parts so I'm going to order tomorrow. I've never tried the 52" before as it's been a back up. Previous boat owner used it when fishing big water like northern Champlain. I just am sure the top is going to be in the way. I had a 52" on my last boat and didn't like it. It's so nice having the head low and out of the way. If the repair doesn't work, I'll replace it. Good news in Minn Kota warranty's it's shafts for life but it's only $27 anyway. I found the problem. Last year when I had to dock boat quick in shallow water and left TM deployed. No problem until a huge cruiser went by throwing off a 4' wake that pounded the TM into the bottom. It broke a tiny screw in side that got trapped between inside and outside shafts causing binding and damage to long inside shaft. TM designed to take horizontal impacts but not vertical ones! I should have took it apart when first had a problem and I probably could have saved the thing. Oh well, lesson learned.
