Sorta slow on the postings lately, and seeing as how there is no ice fishing yet, and it's snowing hard outside...I'll re-live a few of last seasons fishing trips. ;D
I enjoy the Master Angler program and get excited when a fish measures up, in fact I weigh few fish anymore. Mostly just lay them out on the measuring board. A good trip ends with a slimy board .
The first trip of the season to Champlain (4/22) yeilded this 28" 11 lb. 8 oz. fresh water drum. I caught a 14 pounder the same day but it was on the ugly side....assuming a 14 pound fish can, in fact, be ugly . Sheephead were the target fish in this area.
Next came a nice 17 1/4" 2 lb. 3 oz. fallfish (5/2) from Harriman Reservoir. Targeting smallies with jerkbaits Diane and I hooked up with "doubles on dace". Hers was only 14" . Very Cool.
Big pre-spawn bluegill and crappies on a West River setback, locally known as Retreat Meadows, were the target species 5/4. They weren't really on yet but I managed two 9" gills on a slow rolled #2 Mepps.
Took a trip up to Gale Meadows pond 5/30 looking for largemouths and rockbass. Largemouths were small, rockbass were big. Got this 11" model and two more like it on bigger baits, like jig and chunk and chatterbait. My goal for the season was to see how many waters I could get a MA rockie. I failed on the CT river, but scored at Somerset, Gale Meadows and Sadawga.
After failing to get a pre-spawn smallie while targeting them, I scored with this 20 1/2" 3lb 13 oz. post spawner, in a spot that should have held largemouths ...I'll take it. The only big smallie all season for me. Diane scored a MA smallie at Harriman, but I couldn't conjur one up there.
After missing out on most of the summer season, we found ourselves back at Champlain 10/1. While pike and bass fishing at Benson a 13 1/8" white perch hit a big spinnerbait. Total luck.
Back at Champlain 10/15 a nice 24 1/4" pickerel ate my 4 1/2" TX rigged tube. Bass were the target, but I'll take pickerel like this...everytime .
The last trip of the year to Champlain yeilded my first 20" largemouth of the season. This one weighed in at 5 lb. 4 oz. It inhaled a large chatterbait as the sun was beginning to set, and we didn't need the motor to get back into the ramp ;D.
Common denominator with all of these fish would be a very nice day weather wise. Can't wait to try again next year.
