I am a fairly new bass fisherman. I am a little overwhelmed by the choices of fishing line out there. Any recommendations? I fish on Lake Champlain in the Alburgh area.

Well we won't be any help because everyone has their favorite! One thing we all would agree on is not to buy the cheap stuff. All the better monos are good and they are all about on par with each other. Floros I can't speak about because they are too pricey for me. Same thing that applies to mono applies to braids though I have yet to find a braid I don't like. For me a good sale price sells the line.
I can recommend Suffix Elite ( mono)for spinning, Suffix Siege (mono) for baitcasting and like I said all braids perform well if you ask me. I like Stren Super Braid, Suffix Braids including the 832 and recently tried Power Pro and that was good too. Did not like the first generation of Fireline but that may be better now.
You did not ask about line sizes so I did not go there. Hope you are less confused.

For baitcast reels, I've have had excellent luck with Berkley XL. Old tried and true mono. Like my Spiderwire for braid. Spincast, best line I've had luck with that is both extremely tough and less likely to twist Fireline Crystal which is very different the Fireline which can be very stiff. I like fluorocarbon for feel and so fish can't see it but it can be a pain in the butt with line twist on a spin cast reel and coils on a bait cast reel if you aren't careful. Spraying Reel Oil on flora will help with both issues. Many will use braid line with a flora leader. Many can tie knots faster and more competently then me....... The interesting thing is, if you look at most any brand of line it all comes out of the same plant produced by Pure Fishing. I'm sure the specs are different but many brands come out of the same factory. So as Roy says, price should enter the picture and this time of the year you may find some good deals. Keep all lines out of sunlight as much as possible when not in use and store in dry cool place not your boat. Where do you fish?

What would be a wise color to choose from for these lines. for example smoke green, low vis green, clear?
Thanks

Up where you are the water is usually gin clear so a clear or fluorocarbon is probably your best choice. If you use a braid, you can tie on a 3-5' fluorocarbon leader (line) to the business end of the braid. Many do this even in dirty water.
