Hey guys: Neither Scott nor I have done any ocean fishing. But this year our friend Ug, who grew up fishing stripers on Cape Cod, purchased a very nice 23' Trophy and has been after us to join him for some striper fishing off the Maine coast. Ug keeps the boat in the Saco/Old Orchard Beach area at a friends house. Our schedules finally all came right last week and we headed down there on Wednesday afternoon, with plans to fish for a couple of days. We had a great time, fishing for mackeral for bait in the morning, then anchoring over prime striper spots on the incoming tide. Here is a picture of our host, at the wheel of his pride and joy:
The first fish I caught was this striper:
Bonzee caught this one later in the morning:
Over the two days, we caught 40-50 striped bass. The Maine slot limit allows for keeping one bass per day between 20"-26", or anything over 40". We never exceed 40", but the fish above are in the 36" to 38" range. We caught several more of that size, most were over the slot. What a great time! Weather was clear blue skies, very light winds and temps starting in the low 50's and warming to the 70's in the afternoon. Perfect! Needless to say, the experience was great, especially for a couple of lake fishermen who had never fished for stripers.
On Friday morning, fishing for bait, I caught a squid, which provided Ug with unlimited enjoyment. He kept dipping the thing into a bucket of water, and trying to get it to squirt us. After at least four strong squirts, the boat was covered with ink. Here is a picture of the beast:
So, a great new experience for us, lots of fun, now back to Champlain for what we hope will be great fall fishing!
