Heading to camp tomorrow to do final closing for the season. Been a strange season. With moderate high water in the spring to low water levels starting in the late July and dropping thereafter through October.
For me, also a mixed season but not a bad one. Numbers wise, not good at all. Just didn't catch the numbers this year. However, and in my mind more importantly, large fish were caught and can never be unhappy about that. Thumbing through my many pictures, I counted a dozen or more 5 or 5lb plus fish. And one 6lb 3oz in late June. Bunch of four pounders too. Best five fish ran 17 to 22lb plus for a day. Not bad upon reflection. Usually in the past my best weights were caught late October early November but this year weather and out of state travel plans nixed fishing during those productive periods of time. But from what I've read here, I didn't miss much!
Other highlights. I sponsored a young man to fish in our small bass club Rutland Bass as our first junior member. I've watched him grow up over the years as he is the marina owners grandson where camp is located. Come to think of it, being so damn old, I watched his mom grow up too. Anyway, many years ago I recognized the kid had some natural talent, good attitude, ability to listen, and above all the drive/desire to fish. He did real well his first year as a junior member. Club members and friends took him under their collective wing and helped him progress. He told me he learned so much this year from various members he fished with. I want to thank club officers with making sure he fished with a variety of our best fishermen in the club (no I'm not one of them) so he kept learning. It's been a ball watching him progress!
I am looking forward to next year. Contemplating up grading my fishing platform though a wise friend keeps telling me what I have is perfect for what I do if I just add at least one shallow anchor. He's probably not wrong. I do love my Bass Cat and wouldn't own another make. But a newer Cat with wide decks and upgrade electronics are tempting. Will have to see how that goes. Not getting any younger and sometimes want out weighs need......
To all my friends here, please winter well and take care of yourselves. I know I need to get on the ball and do what needs to be done to make sure I'm physically in better shape to take on the 2019 fishing season. Struggled this year with feet, legs, arms/elbows, and know if I don't do some stuff to get my old fat @$$ is some kind of shape 2019 will be worse not better.
Take care my friends.
Enjoy the holidays and the fall hunt for my deer/turkey hunting friends.
